As we all know, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. It is the Irish celebration of the day St. Patrick is said to have cast out the snakes from Ireland. But there is also another celebration the day before, St. Urho’s Day, on March 16. The Carlton Community Toy Drive is happening again this year. We will be working with the Carlton VFW Auxiliary and the focus will be to help veterans and their families that are in need. In addition to toys - hats, mittens and scarves are also needed. As I write my article, the weather has taken a turn for dark clouds, overcast and rain (again). We are all waiting for the sun to shine and dry out our yards so the raking can begin. On Monday, May 10, the City of Carlton Public Works will gather the bags of leaves and last fall’s yard debris from community yards, to be added to the compost pile at the recycling shed. For more than 50 years, the Carlton VFW Post 2962 and Auxiliary have been collecting donations to assist veterans, families of veterans who are deployed, and residents in nursing homes and veterans’ facilities. As we all know, school has started, but it wasn’t like the first day of school that I remember. As a child, I looked forward to wearing the new outfit and shoes that I got to start the school year. Happy Fourth of July to everyone. For me as a kid growing up in Cloquet, the Fourth of July was the highlight of the summer. People came from miles around for the big parade, the carnival rides at Pinehurst Park, family picnics and celebrations. The Carlton Holiday Market was wonderful. My sister, Sherry Erickson, and I took our event passports to at least six businesses in Carlton to shop and get stamped for the drawing at the tree lighting ceremony. We started out at the Bethesda Lutheran Church Bazaar, which is always fun with the homemade baked goods, next to new items, and homemade lefse and lunch. Now that Halloween has come and gone, we can look forward to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. There were chickens. There were also goats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, roosters and even some llamas at Saturday's Chicken Swap in Carlton.
