    The new high school boys hockey schedule could not have been much tougher for the opening two games of the season for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team. On Thursday the Lumberjacks opened with a 6-1 loss to Grand Rapids and on Friday they fell 2-1 to Duluth East Greyhounds - two of the state's top-ranked teams.     Junior hockey returned to the Northland this past week as the Minnesota Wilderness opened 2021 with a pair of road games and their first home game of the season, with mixed results. The Wilderness fell in back-to-back games 3-0 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday to the Janesville Jets on the road. Those losses were followed by an impressive 4-3 win over the Austin Bruins on Sunday evening at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.   • Fast gliding so far for Nordic ski team

    Despite less than ideal snow conditions, the Lumberjacks Nordic ski teams are off to a fast start in this year's ski season. Still ranked in third place by skinnyski.com, the boys team won both of their first two meets handily, beating Proctor and Denfeld at Spirit Mountain Jan. 14 and Mesabi East and Marshall in a tri-meet at home Tuesday.     The Barnum girls basketball coach was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 19, for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his players. Andrew John Palmer, 33, of Moose Lake was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Carlton County Sixth District Court Thursday; each count is related to a different alleged sexual encounter.
