  • High school auditorium gets a massive makeover

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

Fifty years ago, the Cloquet High School auditorium plans included an acoustical shell. Since then, 50 years' worth of band and choir performances have been less than they could have been, as the sound of their instruments and voices also carried upward, to be absorbed by the curtains and drapery above. Not anymore. With the nearly $1.7 million renovation project very close to completion, three portions of an acoustical shell ceiling now hang from the rigging over the stage. When needed, the...

  • Dolly Paulson

    Mar 29, 2019

Dolly Paulson, 83, of Esko, Minn. went home to be with the Lord on March 20, 2019. The Lord lovingly orchestrated Dolly’s passing, allowing her to know to her last breath how much she was admired and loved by her family and friends. Now in Heaven, Dolly rejoices that she can move freely without pain, think clearly and perhaps attend an auction. She married Ralph Paulson on June 19, 1954 in Cloquet. Through courage and strength, she and Ralph raised their family. Her grandchildren were a special joy. A favorite for them was attending tea p... Full story

  • Do your part to cleanup stormwater runoff

    Chris Gass, The Green Guy|Mar 29, 2019

We have now officially entered spring! Shouts of “Hooray!” and sighs of relief can be heard from warm-weather fans all through the area (I know most of our office is Team Summer). Still, even if you’re cheering this opening act of a warmer season, a damaging reality almost always goes with it — flooding. It is one of the greatest threats to homeowners in our state and looking to be a formidable foe this year. With a wet fall sparking a deep winter soil freeze and a snowy February, it’s li...

  • Wright-Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Mar 29, 2019

Hello, readers! I guess the results of the state boys basketball tournament appearance didn’t go as hoped for, but our team, the coaches, the students and fans represented Cromwell-Wright in spectacular fashion. We couldn’t be more proud of you and it sure was a great ride for this group of guys. The goal of one more was reached, so what more can you say? As many of you know, when Minetties burned down, I also lost my complete collection of Wrong Days Buttons. It is sad to realize they are gon...

  • Wrenshall news

Anne Dugan, From the Wrens Desk|Mar 29, 2019

While most of us are excited just to see brown outside instead of white, there is a lot of green poking up in our farm’s potting shed this week. My husband and I own and operate the Food Farm and we have onions an inch high and the tomatoes are showing their cotyledons (a wonderful-sounding word that means the first two leaves of a plant). Our family took lawn chairs out to the greenhouse last week just to bask in the sun and pretend we were on one of the tropical vacations we keep seeing in peo...

  • Wrenshall students have their say on school plans

    Mike Creger, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

Sometimes, it's the most obvious thing that can be neglected. In the past two years, the Wrenshall school district has offered up two referendums to make improvements at its K-12 school. Part of that effort involved public forums where residents could ask questions and espouse their views on the proposed projects and how the cost would impact tax bills. Both times, the effort came up empty as voters said no. Last week, with a third referendum coming in May, district officials and project...

  • City to consider guidelines for West End apartments

    Mar 29, 2019

After approving a conditional use permit to add two ground-floor apartments to the building at 120 Ave. C in the West End commercial district, the Cloquet Planning Commission is now taking another look at the West End. During the Cloquet city council work session March 18, city planning/zoning administrator Al Cottingham explained that the city attorney thought the conditional use permit granted for the apartments — allowing owners Ryan & Zach, LLC greater density than the 20 units per acre currently allowed — may have violated City Code. Cot...

  • Beware spring flood risk

    Mar 29, 2019

The Carlton County sheriff’s office is warning residents to be aware of spring flooding risk, stating in a press release, “We currently are experiencing higher than normal amounts of moisture in the snow pack. This, combined with saturated soils from rain last fall, elevate our risk of flood danger. We are monitoring and will continue to monitor the situation. Currently the weather looks good for the near future for slow melting which helps with flood risk, but we want to get the following information out to Carlton County residents and visitor...

  • DNR urges caution on Minnesota lakes and rivers

    Mar 29, 2019

Warm weather and significant rainfall in parts of the state have resulted in slush and standing water on many water bodies, leading to rapid ice deterioration and making travel over the ice difficult and extremely unsafe, according to the Department of Natural Resources. While most lakes across the state remain ice-covered, increased spring sunlight combined with previous precipitation means ice conditions can change dramatically within a matter of hours, even when the air temperature remains low. Ice this time of year is dangerously deceptive...

  • 'Push hard, comes easy'

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|Mar 29, 2019

My dad is full of old sayings he keeps on hand, waiting to disperse them at opportune times. “Push hard, comes easy,” is one of my all-time favorites. Growing up, he would offer these subtle words of wisdom when we had a difficult chore or heavy lifting that called upon our collective manpower. His words have stuck with me. No matter if I’m honing my lesson or fishing plans, my father’s advice has served me well. Taking my own kids fishing is a perfect example. They will only see the end res...

  • 'They are the face of Cloquet cross country'

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|Mar 29, 2019

To say Mike Bushey has put in his time as a coach in the Cloquet High School cross-country program is putting it mildly. Last week Bushey announced via Twitter that he was resigning his position as head cross-country coach in Cloquet along with his assistant and wife, Jody Zeleznikar, known simply as "Z" by runners. "I've been coaching for 31 years, first at Proctor with Dick Saarela, then at Cloquet when we were combined with Esko," Bushey said. "We restarted the Cloquet program on its own in...

  • Cardinals compete hard, but fall at state

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|Mar 29, 2019

Although Cromwell-Wright didn't get the outcome it had hoped for at last week's Minnesota Boys Basketball Tournament, the team certainly proved it belonged on the big stage. The Cardinals opened play in the Class A quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Williams Arena in Minneapolis against No. 2 seed Ada-Borup Cougars. The game started the way the Cardinals hoped, as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead behind two quick buckets from senior Cameron Cahoon. The Cougars answered right back and tied...

Playing in their second-straight state Class AA tournament - and fourth in the last five years - the unseeded Eskomos opened play against Minneapolis North in the quarterfinals. The Eskomos ended up losing a hard-fought contest 61-53. The game was as intense as it was close, with each team leading by eight points at least once. The game featured 10 ties and nine lead changes...

  • Return of the skatepark

    Mar 29, 2019

Cloquet's Brady Hall takes a turn shoveling snow at the Cloquet Skatepark Saturday, barely missing fellow skateboarder Brady Doran with the heavy wet snow. A group of kids were skateboarding and riding scooters on the upper ramp Saturday, which was dry because Doran had cleared it (down to a layer of ice) with a snowblower he brought from home the week before. A group of teens were working to try to shovel other sections of the skatepark, and hoping for lots of sunshine to hasten the melting...
