  • Lakehead fun for all

    Mike Creger|Sep 2, 2022

There may have to be a re-turning of the phrase "kid in a candy store" when it comes to the childlike excitement Saturday in Esko. Kids at the Lakehead Harvest Festival last weekend had a wide variety of things to do and see, especially when it comes to the main attraction at the festival: tractors and engines and things that move in old-time fashion. And the adults in attendance Saturday looked like kids as they fine-tuned their engines, planed boards, munched on steamed corn and burgers, and... Full story

  • Lumberjacks outshoot Esko for the win

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 2, 2022

Every year the Esko and Cloquet-Carlton girls soccer teams meet early in the season and the winner has an opportunity to set the tone for their season ahead. On Tuesday, it was the Lumberjacks who came away with a physical 5-2 win. Cloquet set the tone for the first half by scoring just 16 seconds in on a long pass from Avery Carlson to Alexa Snesrud, giving the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead. "Sometimes getting a goal that quickly can work against you," said Cloquet-Carlton coach Dustin Randall. "There is... Full story

  • Runners get their feet wet at Chub Lake

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 2, 2022

For more years than anyone can remember, the local high school cross country teams have opened the season at Carlton's Chub Lake Park. The race, hosted by Esko, is more of a scrimmage than an actual meet, but it is a great way for runners to get their feet wet and see what the competition is like. "I have no idea how long this meet has been held," said Esko coach Jerimy Hallsten. "It is a really good opportunity for the kids who have never been to a cross country meet before and it gives them a... Full story

The Lumberjacks opened play Thursday with a resounding 9-0 win on the road over Proctor. "We were ready right from the start," said CEC coach John Sundquist. "Last year there were times where we came out slow, but Thursday the guys were ready." After graduating seven players from last year's team that went 12-4-1, Sundquist is anxious... Full story

  • Korby's connections: Country club celebrates families at weekend tourney

    Steve Korby|Sep 2, 2022

More than 150 golfers, from the very young to what most would consider quite old but young at heart, converged on the Cloquet Country Club to play in the weekend adult-child golf tournament. Golf, a sport for life, affords that opportunity. “We never advertise or publicize the event,” said Cloquet course pro/manager Bill Manahan. “Yet, we’re able to get numbers that rival our invitational tournament. We’ve had kids play in the tournament with their dad or mom, and now they’re playing wit...

  • Kettle River News

    Marcia Sarvela|Sep 2, 2022

I would like to thank all the volunteers who made the Ma & Pa Kettle Days happen again this year. Covid played a part in making us start over from scratch and we are really trying to keep this event going. I also want to thank all the people who attended. I heard many people liked the new way we did the standstill parade. We nearly ran out of pies at the pie social and many people enjoyed the old-fashioned-style bingo with great prizes. There will be a Ma & Pa Kettle Days meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Kettle River Senior Center to...

  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|Sep 2, 2022

If you are a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent, you know that school will be starting on Tuesday, Sept. 6. We are excited for our kids, and remember how we felt on that first day of grade school or junior high way back when. The Carlton community has a long history of having a school within the city. The citizens of the Village of Carlton petitioned for a school on Sept. 18, 1871, and became District No. 2. A small wooden structure was built and one teacher, Miss Flora Lafan, was hired....

  • Wright/Cromwell News

    Jennie Hanson|Sep 2, 2022

Grandchildren are wonderful gifts, and if you live long enough you get great-grandkids and maybe even great-great-grandkids. That is what we think of our grandkids, and now three great-grandkids. They were here for a visit last week and we made some wonderful memories. The great-grandkids — ages 4, 2, and 1 — were able to camp out in our yard and then spend the whole day with us along with their parents, making pancakes, chocolate chip cookies and playing with all the interesting toys and games I have for them. By the end of that day, I was...

Teachers were the focus Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Moose Lodge. The project to feed and outfit teachers with supplies was a $3,000 effort, said event coordinator Patti Haus (not pictured). Last year, the Moose donated backpacks to students, but since the United Way and others were doing that this year, "We decided, 'Let's help teachers!'" Patti said. The Moose enjoyed a banner summer, she added, with contributing projects from May to July worth $20,000.... Full story
