A number of local organizations are holding events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

At the Cloquet Public Library, local astronomer John Cavanaugh will present new information about the moon landing starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, with a special introduction by Steve Korby in his "homemade" space suit. The presentation is targeted at anyone ages 8 and older. Those with memories of the moon landing are encouraged to attend and share. The library will also hold Space Camp 1-3 p.m. July 15-18. Additionally, the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Transportation and Logistics Research Center is hosting a free educational event for young children (pre-K through fifth grade) and their families 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room on the UW-Superior campus, 1605 Catlin Ave. in Superior. It is sponsored by the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium with support from community partners, including Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College's Thunder Rocketry Club.

"The landing of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon's surface on July 20, 1969, marked one of the most significant human achievements," said professor Daniel Rust. "Fifty years ago the historic event prompted people of all ages to strive for the seemingly impossible. UWS is delighted to bring the community together with fun and educational activities inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars."

Activities include:

• UWS Observatory tours with up-close views of the sun, the opportunity to take pictures through the telescope with a smartphone, as well as the option of returning between 10 p.m. and midnight for a rare opportunity to view Jupiter, Saturn and the moon in the night sky.

• A 'walk on the moon' in an indoor bouncy house;

• Rockets, drones and robot demonstrations;

• Coloring contest;

• Space-themed arts, crafts and activities.
