Esko's USG team takes third in tournament

Last weekend the Esko U16 fastpitch team competed in the Minnesota Softball State Championship, Tier 3, in Big Lake, placing third out of 25 teams. With the top-three finish, the team qualified to participate at the Aug. 11 Minnesota Twins Parade of Champions. It's been a busy few weeks for the Esko U-16 girls softball team. Sponsored by USG, Esko played nine games in two days last weekend to capture third place in the Minnesota Softball Fastpitch Championship state tournament in Big Lake, Minn. The team had wins over Big Lake, Monticello, Browntown, Medford, Mankato, Jordan and Richfield.

"It was a great weekend for our girls," said Esko coach Merle Kelley.

But it was also a long one. The team was scheduled to play starting at 9:30 a.m., but a 2 ½ hour rain delay pushed them to a 1 p.m. start.
