Larry Fuglestad, 13, and Larry Oswell, 12, of Black Hoof Valley (near Mahtowa) are both enjoying a ride on the Octopus at the Carlton County Fair in the early 1960s.

It's fair time!

With the official start of the 129th annual Carlton County Fair only a couple days away, on Tuesday the 4-H students were showing off their projects in hopes of impressing the judges enough to earn a spot down at the Minnesota State Fair.

Each project eventually goes before a panel of judges who interviews the child and rank each project. The judge's job isn't easy, as each project must be checked and graded based on factors such as quality and the interview. The judges must assess the kid's devotion to the project through the interview and reflect on the project's unique style. Then, they must decide on which of the projects will represent Carlton County down at the State Fair.

Tuesday's judging that took place on Tuesday only covered the static projects, or non livestock projects. The cows, pigs, poultry and such were brought in starting Wednesday.
