Esko junior Drake Schram (3) scores on a header in last Thursday's CEC boys soccer game against Hermantown.

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team may have a 3-3 record right now, but head coach Dave Bergan says the record doesn't show how well they are playing soccer.

"We are competing with every team that we play," Bergan said on Wednesday, after the boys beat Hibbing/Chisholm 5-0 at home on Tuesday, but lost to the Hawks 3-2 the Thursday before that in a close game at Hermantown.

Bergan said he's "psyched" about the team, which does a great job of learning a new skill in practice and applying it on the field. They are strong all around, he said.

"I think we have multiple areas we can attack from and that we're scoring from. That's been a huge plus for us," he said, noting that players from defenders to attackers have scored so far this season. "Nobody's afraid to attack - that's the great news. We encourage it and they recognize how to cover for one another when they do."

The Lumberjacks were scheduled to play Duluth East on Thursday after the Pine Knot News went to press, but the weather didn't look good.

Bergan said he liked their chances if they got to play the larger school.

"If we play East, I think we have good chances," the first-year head coach said. "I honestly think our boys can play with any team up here."
