In response to concerns from parents of students who would normally walk to school this year, the Cloquet School District is trying a “winter-only bus route” to pick up Washington Elementary, middle school and high school students who live too close to school to qualify for busing.

The bus route started Monday, just in time for a cold snap that sent temperatures to -15 degrees Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Michael Cary said he has not heard any numbers yet, as the service just started, but explained that the district sent the information to school families through the messenger system earlier this month. He planned to follow up with Cloquet Transit later this week.

Parents should have received the message Dec. 4 on the district’s Infinite Campus portal that the routes would start Dec. 16 and run through March 13.

“Students interested in using the winter route must make a one-time contact to Cloquet Transit in advance to notify them of their intended pickup and dropoff location,” the message advised. Families can contact Cloquet Transit by calling 879-1291.
