History mystery solved

Cloquet digs out after a February 1922 snowstorm.

Last month, the Pine Knot published a photo from the Carlton County Historical Society of people digging out from a February of 1922 storm in Cloquet. The photo above was described as from an "unknown street." Thanks to sharp-eyed reader Ben Anderson of Cloquet, we now know that the photo was from the corner of Third Street and Second Street, looking south, near the gas station designed Frank Lloyd Wright. The two homes on either side of Third Street in the foreground remain today.

The same street today ... not long after the Thanksgiving storms of 2019. The photo was taken looking up Third Street, just off Cloquet Avenue by the U.S. Post Office.
