Obituary: Mamie Katherine Seppanen

Mamie Katherine Seppanen, 86, died Thursday, March 19, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice in Duluth.

She was born on May 7, 1933 in Kettle River to Peter and Alma (Wimpari) Wiitanen. She married Robert “Bob” Seppanen on Oct. 15, 1955, and they resided in Kettle River, Proctor, Cromwell and Esko over their 58 years of marriage. Mamie was employed as a secretary for the Air Base in Duluth until it closed.

Mamie was a member of the Cromwell Young Old timers and the Minnesota Finnish American Historical Society Lakehead Chapter Number 1. She enjoyed visiting and going to dances with her husband. Mamie and Bob enjoyed fishing and camping with friends and family in the summer months. They enjoyed traveling on bus trips, visiting Finland and numerous other locations over the years. Mamie’s hobbies included working in the flower and vegetable garden, sewing, knitting and crocheting.

Mamie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; grandson, Peter; and brother, Rudy Wiitanen.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Horabik; son, James Seppanen; granddaughter, Emily Bowman, DC (Clint); brother in-law, Jerry (Diane) Seppanen; sister-in-law, Sue Wiitanen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family burial will take place at the Leonard Cemetery in the spring.
