Spring schools activities on hold through May 4

The Minnesota State High School League sent out a press release following the order that schools remain closed and transition to distance learning through May 4 by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, noting that “effective immediately” and until the governor has lifted his school closure declaration:

All participation in MSHSL spring activities at all member schools is suspended.

Participation includes, but is not limited to, competitions, training, practices, scrimmages, and contests.

The MSHSL said it is being responsive to member schools and keeping future participation options open for the spring activity season. “Pending a reopening of schools by the governor, return to participation protocols will be determined and communicated by the MSHSL board and MSHSL staff,” the release stated.

No decisions regarding the cancellation of spring activities have been made.

The suspension of participation includes fine arts activities and athletics.

Library closed for now; use online resources

With the governor’s Stay at Home order in effect through April 10, the Cloquet Public Library is also closed to the public and its workers, which means they are no longer filling orders for books and other materials that people can pick up.

Library staff will continue to monitor the library’s email account at [email protected]. Patrons do not need to return borrowed materials at this time, and overdue and lost fines are being waived until further notice.

Anyone with a library card can make use of the many online resources — eBooks, audiobooks, downloadable magazines and more — available through the library.

Don’t have a library card? Now people can apply for Arrowhead Library System Library Card online.

To remove barriers for our patrons and to help provide quick access to digital content as schools and academic institutions move to distance learning, ALS has created a new online library card application that can be filled out by anyone living in the ALS seven-county service area (including Carlton County) who wants an ALS public library card.

Upon review, ALS staff will process applications and send new library cards via mail to the mailing addresses listed in the applications. If email addresses are included, library card numbers will be emailed to patrons as well.

Casinos parallel state order, stay closed

Black Bear Casino Resort and Fond-du-Luth Casino in downtown Duluth closed March 18 and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, which owns and operates both casinos, expects to remain closed as long as the state has a stay-at-home order.

Rescheduled play remains slated for May

This month’s play, “The Boys Next Door,” which was scheduled for March 27-29 and April 2-5 has now been tentatively rescheduled for May. The Carlton High School play has also been postponed for now. Decisions on other scheduled events will be announced.
