Obituaries: Fr. Roland Joseph Antus

The Reverend Father Roland Joseph Antus, 85, of Cloquet went to be with our Savior Jesus Christ on June 21, 2020, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton.

He was born Dec. 11, 1934, in Cloquet, the seventh child of Stephen and Rosean (Caza) Antus. Fr. Roland graduated from Saint Paul Seminary with a Master of Science in theology. He was ordained in 1962. He served parishes in the Diocese of Duluth including Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Duluth, June 20, 1962-Sept. 8, 1965; Blessed Sacrament Parish in Hibbing, 1965-1970; Sacred Heart Cathedral in Duluth, 1970; St. Mary's Catholic Church in Deer River, 1970-1973; St. Augustine Catholic Church in Cohasset, 1970-1973; St. James Catholic Church in Duluth, 1973-1983; Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, 1983-1989; Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mountain Iron, 1984-1985; St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, 1989-1998; and St. Thomas of the Pines Church in Pine Beach, 1989-1998; and as administrator of St. Edward Catholic Church in Longville, 1998-2008. After his retirement, Fr. Roland returned to his hometown of Cloquet and served numerous parishes.

He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Welsh Council 5132 and served as State Chaplain. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. He traveled the world and was fluent in several languages. He loved to spend time with family and friends on his property at Cedar Lake in Aitkin. Fr. Roland will be greatly missed by his family and friends. All who knew him were inspired by his kindness, compassion, and generosity. Fr. Roland was a good man, a Holy man.

Fr. Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gerard (Carol), Stephen (Peggy), Alex (Nancy), and Fr. Lawrence Antus; and sisters Terese (Ron) Rutka and Rita Sjolsvold.

He is survived by a brother, David (Diane) Antus; two sisters, Rose Marie Carlson and Joyce (Vance) Greene; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation resumes 1 p.m. Sunday, June 28 until the 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Interment service will be at Old Calvary Cemetery.
