The Cloquet boys saw another strong finish, placing five runners in the top 10 Thursday afternoon at Pine Valley. Cloquet finished with a team total of 23 points, while Duluth East was second with 32 points and Esko finished third with a team total of 83.

Coming off a win in Hermantown a week earlier, the Cloquet boys cross country team came in atop a three-team triangular meet at their home course in Cloquet Thursday afternoon. Junior Harmony Tracy won the girls meet for the Lumberjacks, but as a team the girls couldn't quite catch the speedy Duluth East Greyhounds.

Oliver Maitke from Duluth East won the top honors with a time of 17:54, but Cloquet took home the next four spots with Miles Fischer finishing second just four seconds behind the winner. Josh Sanders placed third for Cloquet while Cale Prosen finished fourth and Benjamin Bauer placed fifth overall.

"We have the experience of being down at the state tournament and the kids all know what we expect as coaches," Lumberjacks head coach Chandra Allen said. "They also know what to expect from themselves and their teammates, so with continued hard work this team has a lot of potential."

Allen said it's a different year because of the pandemic.

"Compared to last season - the changes, new guidelines - we are adapting the best we can, so our attitude has been to control what we can control and try not worry about the rest," the second-year coach said.

In the girls meet, Cloquet's Harmony Tracy took the top spot with a time of 19:43, a good two minutes ahead of Anna Helmer of Duluth East, who ended with a time of 21:44. Crystal Kaczmarczyk and Genna Johnson of Duluth East finished third and fourth while Esko's Grace Hrabik placed fifth.

"Harmony is just an amazing runner who works so hard for her success," Allen said. "Her time was better than several of the boys who competed in the boys meet."

Duluth East had three runners in the top five and earned the top girls spot with 22 points. Cloquet was second with a total of 42, and the Eskomos had 79 points in their third-place finish.

The Lumberjacks were scheduled to host their second home meet of the season Thursday in another triangular meet with Proctor and Grand Rapids after this issue of the Pine Knot News went to press.
