DaWayn "Dewey" Herbert Johnson, 86, of Carlton passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side July 4, 2021. Born Oct. 9, 1934, to Caroline and Herbert Johnson in Red Wing, he attended a one-room school on an island on the Mississippi River through eighth grade, then attended Red Wing High School, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin Superior for a master's degree in fine arts.

Dewey taught art and physical education at Cloquet High School for more than 35 years. He was also an assistant football coach for a number of years. He painted signs and owned the Pine Hill golf course in Carlton. After retirement, he loved spending time at his home on Chub Lake.

Growing up on the Mississippi River, Dewey learned to love hunting, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed many fishing trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the annual deer hunt at his hunting shack. He was an excellent artist, a popular teacher, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Always positive and optimistic, he energized others with his warm and welcoming friendship.
