14-year-old Elizabeth Peterson sat nearby, painting the exterior of Crowned Salon on Avenue C.

Artist Phyllis Ducey got her wish: to see people "sprawled out," doing their thing, during West End Art Day Saturday. Ducey wrote the grant for the West End Flourish event, and organized a day that included a children's area supplied with paints and projects, from suncatchers to largish rocks to use as a canvas.

Ducey brought paintings to sell and also painted, plein air style, the historic steam train engine that takes center stage at Fauley Park, the hub of Saturday's event.
