Steve Kneeland provided this photo, taken by his mother, Jean Kneeland, from the scene on March 24, 1963, at the Cloquet Co-op Shopping Center parking lot on 14th Street (where City Hall is now located). The Cloquet High School boys basketball team lost to Marshall by one point in the championship game of the state tournament the night before, in what remains one of the best championship games in tournament history.

The welcome home celebration for the team was attended by a reported 2,500 Cloquet fans. Signing an autograph here is guard Dave "Mouse" Meisner with Mike Forrest in the background. Meisner, Forrest, and center Dennis Breitbarth were all named "All State" performers. Forrest averaged more than 27 points a game, leading all tournament players in scoring. Gary Welton and Dick Boyer were the other two Cloquet starters.

Does anyone know who the boy between Meisner and Forrest is? And, if readers have any other photographs from 1963 or other memorabilia (newspaper clippings, programs, pins) from that unforgettable season, we'd love to show them in the Pine Knot this month as we celebrate 60 years since that remarkable run. Send pictures of your items to [email protected] or drop by the office and let us take a picture or make a copy at our office at 122 Avenue C in Cloquet's West End.
