New trail celebrated

The Brule-St. Croix Chapter of the North Country Trail Association celebrated on June 1 the completion of the new State Line Trailhead and new segment southeast of Wrenshall off the Military Road. Speakers, a ribbon cutting, and guided hikes marked the occasion. U.S. Senator Tina Smith was there to help cut the ribbon, along with Carlton County land commissioner Mark Westphal, former land commissioner Greg Bernu, Superior Hiking Trail Association executive director Lisa Luokkala, and leaders from North Country Trail Association.

The North Country National Scenic Trail stretches 4,800 miles across eight states. Minnesota hosts more than 850 miles of it, and Wisconsin has just over 200. With the opening of the new segment of the trail at the Minnesota-Wisconsin state line, the North Country Trail more smoothly connects with the Superior Hiking Trail's southern terminus. Its 300-mile path is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail.
