The fall colors are painting our community with beautiful gold, red, orange and yellow leaves. The changes make us feel excited about getting outside to get that last-minute yardwork completed or to just take a walk with family and friends on the Munger Trail in Carlton. Halloween will be here before we know it. To celebrate the day, the Carlton Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Downtown Trick or Treat in Carlton. Businesses and organizations will be setting up booths on the main street of... Full story

Happy Independence Day. I hope folks will celebrate safely with family and friends now that most of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted. About three weeks ago, I had the opportunity to have a get-together with family and friends to celebrate my 75th birthday and even enjoy a visit from my son and daughter-in-law from California. We ate a lot of food, took family pictures and played some lawn games, including molkky — a gift from the Lance Seboe family. Molkky, aka finska, is a popular F...

The Green House will soon be placing the beautiful hanging plants to brighten the main street of Carlton. I have mine ready to go, and with a little help they will be planted soon. I want to wish a happy birthday to everyone who is or will be 75 years old this year. It is amazing to me that we have lived three-quarters of a century, and that includes my classmates from the Class of 1964. The Carlton community blood drive is 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 1 at St. Frances Catholic Church,...

As I write my article, the weather has taken a turn for dark clouds, overcast and rain (again). We are all waiting for the sun to shine and dry out our yards so the raking can begin. On Monday, May 10, the City of Carlton Public Works will gather the bags of leaves and last fall’s yard debris from community yards, to be added to the compost pile at the recycling shed. Carlton High School students and staff are volunteering to rake community members’ yards and pick up trash Friday, May 7. If you...

At last, the cold has relaxed its grip and we are able to get outside. We can look forward to the first day of spring on March 20, and even further to the first day of summer on June 20. Don’t forget to move clocks forward an hour on March 14. Although the pandemic and cold weather has kept many of us home, the Carlton community, school and organizations are beginning to plan for some events. The All Night Grad Party committee is selling pasties through the Magnolia Café in Carlton. The ta... Full story

The holiday season is fast approaching, but look for changes this year because of the pandemic. For more than 50 years, the Carlton VFW Post 2962 and Auxiliary have been collecting donations to assist veterans, families of veterans who are deployed, and residents in nursing homes and veterans’ facilities. Due to the pandemic, the annual Christmas auction fundraiser will not be held this year. The Carlton VFW will still need help from the community and businesses. Monetary donations will go i...

Happy Halloween to everyone. The Carlton Chamber members and area businesses will be coming together to put on the outdoor “Downtown Carlton Trick or Treat” event 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Businesses not located in downtown Carlton can set up in the heart of downtown, along the sidewalks of Chestnut Avenue/Highway 210. Kids, put on your best costume and come out to trick-or-treat. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Businesses and community members will also be participating in...

As we all know, school has started, but it wasn’t like the first day of school that I remember. As a child, I looked forward to wearing the new outfit and shoes that I got to start the school year. It was exciting to see classmates that I hadn’t seen all summer, since my family lived in the country. This year, kids who start school in person are wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and washing their hands many times a day, and maintaining 6 feet between desks. The teacher who greets each stu...

Happy Fourth of July to everyone. For me as a kid growing up in Cloquet, the Fourth of July was the highlight of the summer. People came from miles around for the big parade, the carnival rides at Pinehurst Park, family picnics and celebrations. In the evening my parents took all three of us to the fireworks at Pinehurst Park. And it was usually hot, sunny and humid, like the weather has been lately. It really was an exciting and fun day. Enjoy the Fourth of July celebrations as limted as they...

Although the weather has been rather chilly, the end of May will be here soon with the hope of warm weather and a time to plant our flowers and vegetable gardens. It is also a time to honor the family, friends and veterans who are no longer with us on Memorial Day, May 25. As in the past, the Carlton VFW Post 2962 Honor Guard will be visiting area cemeteries to honor the fallen men and women who gave their lives to keep our country free. Find the schedule for the honor guard on Page 1 of this...

Happy Mother’s Day. During this time of social distancing, let us take time to honor moms and to show our appreciation for their continued love and support on Sunday. The first Mother’s Day in the United States was celebrated on May 12, 1908, at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church to honor Anna Jarvis’ mother. Mother’s Day can actually be traced back to the 17th century in England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Lent, and was a special day when rules about fasting and penance...

I hope everyone is staying safe in their homes. Like me, you are probably doing those projects that have been put off for weeks or even months. As my friend tells me, I am good at procrastination. As most activities and events have been postponed or cancelled in area communities, there is not much happening in the city of Carlton either. The Magnolia Café has put in a take-out window for those of you who want to get your favorite latte, cappuccino or treat. And Carlton Meat & Grocery is open...

Think Spring! The weather has given us hope that spring may be closer than we think. The days are getting longer, the sun is shining and people are greeting each other with a smile. (I am trying to be optimistic.) Somebody once told me that a smile is a nice gift to give, and it doesn't cost anything. I would like to wish everyone Happy Saint Patrick's Day on March 17 and Happy Saint Urho's Day on March 16! Some of you are probably wondering about St. Urho's Day. The legend of St. Urho is the... Full story

I hope everyone is beginning the new year with family and friends, and a positive look to the future. Is cabin fever setting in? Well, the city of Carlton has the answer with its Winterfest Celebration, set for Saturday, Feb. 8. The Winterfest idea was started about 25 years ago to help with the winter blues. In the past there was volleyball and softball in the snow, a fishing contest at Chub Lake, and the Cloquet Rotary organized golfing on the lake. For a couple of years a group brought sled...

The Carlton Holiday Market was wonderful. My sister, Sherry Erickson, and I took our event passports to at least six businesses in Carlton to shop and get stamped for the drawing at the tree lighting ceremony. We started out at the Bethesda Lutheran Church Bazaar, which is always fun with the homemade baked goods, next to new items, and homemade lefse and lunch. Our next stop was The Greenhouse, where we were treated to a pop-up concert by the Madrigals from Cloquet High School. It was great to...

The Christmas season is upon us, and I finally finished putting up my Christmas lights. Then the storm came with a vengeance and covered some of the reindeer and trees. I will do my best to clear things out before Christmas and the Carlton Holiday Market. Please take time to visit the Carlton Holiday Market Dec. 7. For more than 30 years before the holiday market started, we held a craft show at Carlton High School. At first, the Carlton Hockey Association organized it as a fundraiser to help...

Now that Halloween has come and gone, we can look forward to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. There are some among us who groan and “bah humbug” about the holidays, but there are others, like myself, who will be putting up a Christmas light display for all to enjoy. My family has been putting up lighted trees, reindeer, blow-up snowmen and strings of lights on the house since the 1990s. This year my gratitude goes out to Mark Larson, Stanley McKibbon, Nikki Rackliffe and Lucy Rackliffe f... Full story

There were chickens. There were also goats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, roosters and even some llamas at Saturday's Chicken Swap in Carlton. Sponsored by the Carlton Area Chamber of Commerce, the annual event kicks off Carlton's fall season. In addition to all the critters, local farmers had honey, salsa, vegetables, fruits and so much more. Hopefully everyone had a chance to stop and shop for something special. If you did not have an opportunity this fall, check out next spring's Carlton chicken...

  • Carlton News: Carlton Daze are coming soon

    Leola Rodd|Jul 19, 2019

Carlton's celebration of "Carlton Daze" is just around the corner, July 26-28. Over the years how many community celebrations has Carlton had? I checked at the Carlton County Historical Society to see if I could find out the answer. Although I did not find out the exact number, there have been several celebrations, dances and parades in the Carlton community. The celebrations have taken place at different times of the year -- likely to find the niche where we fit into the community festivities... Full story

Although Carlton High School graduation has come and gone as with other area schools, I thought it might be interesting to visit the Carlton County Historical Society for a look at the history of Carlton High School. From the Carlton County Historical Society: The Carlton school located in the county seat was destroyed by fire three times. The first two schools were wooden structures, and fire equipment and access to water to fight the fires was limited. The second school was built in the 1890s...

Last Saturday the annual Chicken Swap was held at Carlton’s Four Seasons complex parking lot. Although the weather was a bit chilly, many local community members set up booths to trade or sell their chickens, goats, rabbits, puppies, kittens and homemade goodies. Hundreds of people came out to check out the animals, and maybe add to their menagerie at home. Shoppers could also purchase maple syrup, honey, baked goods and homemade items. If you missed this Chicken Swap, there will be another one...

Last Thursday, I was invited to the Oldenburg House for a presentation on “Phenology – Document Spring” by Betsy Dugan, a practitioner of backyard phenology. Since I had no idea what phenology meant, I looked it up on my phone. It is “the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life” (USA National Phenology Network). I think I like Betsy Dugan’s definition better. She explained that it is the timing of nature’s calendar: the...
