  • Cloquet shines in Swain monsoon

    Dwight Cadwell|Oct 11, 2019

The Cloquet cross country teams were unfazed by the mud, the cold or the rain Saturday as the boys team captured first and the girls took fourth place in the 69th annual Swain Invitational cross country meet in Duluth. It was the first time the Lumberjacks had won the event since 1985, when Cloquet was combined with Esko and they won both the boys and girls championships. "With the cold wet weather conditions, the course was much slower than the runners are used to," said head coach Chandra Alle...

  • Java Jacks is open for business

    Jordan Allen|Oct 11, 2019

Late nights and early risings mixed with the colder temperatures of fall creates a deadly, sleepy challenge for high school students. Some days, the rush to school can leave students without the daily dose of caffeine needed to get through those first few hours of class. Not anymore. Students at Cloquet High School can rest easy knowing that when they arrive at school, they can secure a quick cup of joe. Cloquet High School’s new café, Java Jacks, offers students a convenient and co...

The Minnesota Wilderness swept the Minot Minotauros in their home opener series in Cloquet last weekend. Friday night was a night full of red lights, as the Wilderness topped the Minotauros 7-6 in a shootout. Nate Horn opened up his third season for the Wilderness with a hat trick. Veterans Nick Ports, Jake Herter and Tyler Watkins also netted goals, leading the team to overtime. With no goals ending the game in OT, Kimball Johnson buried a shootout goal, securing the win for the Wilderness. On...

  • Monster muskie is a Vermilion treasure

    Bret Baker|Oct 11, 2019

I had my article for this week almost completely written when I got a short and simple text from my oldest brother, Bob, on Saturday night. His wife Julie had boated a monster muskie. Exciting, for sure, but better yet, the fish was good enough to win the Fortune Bay Resort Casino muskie tournament on Lake Vermilion. I scrapped my article, realizing their story was better than mine. Remembering the weather kept me off the water on Saturday, I could only imagine the conditions farther north on...

  • Now's the time to join 4-H chapter

    Hannah Baker|Oct 11, 2019

Head. Heart. Hands. Health. These four words guide the lives of young children. These four words lead teenagers towards their goals. And these four words provide connections between ideas and action. This is the 4-H lifestyle. In honor of National 4-H Week, when new membership years begin, Jess Waldbillig and Aubrey Compo wanted to call attention to the 117-year-old program. Waldbillig, 19, is a Southern St. Louis County participant, and a member of the outreach committee for the Minnesota...

  • Carlton, Wrenshall school districts ready for public input on consolidation

    Mike Creger|Oct 11, 2019

The consensus reached at a joint meeting Monday of the full Carlton and Wrenshall school boards is that members will likely seek a referendum in August of next year on facilities improvements at two schools. But that fact, as opposed to having a vote in February, does not mean board members are easing up on what has been a whirlwind of meetings this late summer and fall trying to work out possible conditions for a consolidation. “Let’s keep the momentum going,” Wrenshall board member Janaki Fisher-Merritt said. While the Wrenshall board is al...

  • Cloquet homecoming royalty crowned

    Oct 11, 2019

Cloquet High School seniors Madi Vermeersch and Trey Harkins were crowned Homecoming Queen and King on Friday, Oct. 4 at Bromberg Field in a time-honored tradition. CHS activities assistant Matt Carlson said last Friday was packed with homecoming activities, from the pep fest on the football field that afternoon to the football game against Grand Rapids and a school dance after. "We had a good crowd," Carlson said. "It was good football weather." The halftime celebration included introductions...
