Cloquet city parks reopen … mostly

At the direction of Gov. Tim Walz, the city of Cloquet has opened a limited number of park facilities to allow for safe outdoor recreation — provided people follow safe social distancing practices.
Tennis courts are already open to the public. Facilities will be open for small groups and recreational use only. Organized events and league play continue to be prohibited by the State of Minnesota.
Playgrounds will not reopen for now, because it’s impossible to keep them disinfected.
Additionally, the skatepark at Athletic Park on the corner of 14th Street and Prospect Avenue will remain closed, due to issues with crowding and the difficulty in maintaining social distancing there, said city administrator Tim Peterson during Tuesday’s Cloquet City Council meeting.
In a press release, city officials stressed that residents should practice social distancing, noting that city staff cannot be responsible for enforcement of these guidelines and thus patrons must play a role in protecting themselves and fellow community members.
Due to state guidelines on regular disinfection and social distancing, all indoor facilities and Spafford Park Campground will remain closed. Additionally, the city will not accept park reservations for gatherings of more than 10 people.
Walz’s April 18 said people must not engage in outdoor recreational activities where they will come into proximity with others from different households.
