Delbert R. Weets, 81, of Carlton went to be with Jesus on July 26, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 11, 1941, in Ogema, Minnesota, the son of Harold and Zena (Oltoff) Weets, and was one of 10 children. Del graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes in 1960 and moved to Cloquet to join his brother Harold after graduation. He worked at Bridgeman’s in Cloquet while attending college at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Del met the love of his life at Journey Christian Church and was united in marriage to Susan Marie Maki on Oct. 3, 1964, and spent 57 years faithfully by her side. He served in the Air National Guard and worked as an elementary teacher for the Cloquet school district, retiring in 1998. Del was an avid gardener, farmer, carpenter and conversationalist. He could often be found on the sidelines cheering on his children and grandchildren at their events, and was a man deeply committed to his faith.
Del was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Lee, Darlene, Gertrude, Harold, Jenny and Dennis. He is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Derek (Mary) Weets, Darrell (Desiree) Weets, Darren “Buzz” (Layne) Weets, Desiree “Dee Dee” (David) Loberg and Darci (Leonard Cobb) Weets; grandchildren, Nathan Weets, Drake Weets, Danna Weets, Elise Loberg, William Loberg, Colin Loberg, Lincoln Weets and Maxwell Weets; three sisters, Lorraine, Shirley, and Eileen; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at the Journey Christian Church, 1400 Washington Ave. in Cloquet. Visitation continues at 12 p.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Monday, Aug. 1, also at the Journey Christian Church, followed by a luncheon in the church social hall. Interment service will be at Hillside Cemetery in Carlton. Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.
