Duluth man claims Lost Forester race

Trail runners and walkers, plus a few leashed dogs, gathered at Pine Valley early Saturday, Aug. 27 for the sixth annual Lost Forester Trail Run. The 26 participants completed one lap of the 5.5-kilometer Nordic ski trail.

Leading all racers to the finish line was 35-year-old Nathan Bronk, of Duluth, in a Lost Forester course record time of 24 minutes, 29 seconds. Amber Kantonen, of Cloquet, captured the women's title and finished third overall in a time of 29:47.

Before the race started, Bronk admitted he had never been to Pine Valley and didn't know what to expect. After the race, he said the hills and wet footing from the overnight rain were challenging, but he enjoyed his first trip through the park. After ringing the finishing bell, all participants were treated to a post-race breakfast of flapjacks inside the Spafford Chalet, another Lost Forester tradition.

Rounding out the top five finishers in the women's division were: 2. Whitney Price, Cloquet; 3. Alyssa Avery, Carlton; 4. Jill Koszarek, Duluth; and 5. Kathryn Meisner, Cloquet.

After race winner Bronk, top finishers in the men's division were: 2. Joe Fournier, Proctor; 3. Alex Hickok, Superior; 4. Trevor Kallinen, Hibbing; and 5. Steven Koszarek, Duluth.

The Lost Forester Trail Run is a fundraiser for the Blue House Orphanage in Kazoo, Uganda. Funds raised help girls and young women grow in a safe environment where they receive education and have a chance to beat the poverty they face as vulnerable children and orphans.
