Thomson Board moves ahead with road paving project

May 5, 2023

The Thomson Township board of supervisors is moving forward with the East Riverside Road paving project that residents have been pushing for since 2019.

The board approved a bid for the paving project at their meeting on April 27, 2023, for $403,864. The township received five bids and ultimately selected the lowest bidder to complete the project.

This comes after 27 township residents signed a petition urging the board to repave East Riverside Road in March 2021. Due to new building construction on the road, the board approved the request for the repavement project but originally scheduled the project to be completed in 2022, so as to not interfere with the construction project.

Residents at the time pointed out that the township’s comprehensive plan promised, “all roads will be paved by 2018,” which they felt had not happened for East Riverside Road. As of May 2, township officials were unsure of when the paving project will be complete.

In other business, the board reviewed the fund balance remaining from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds that were received from the federal government during the Covid-19 pandemic.

These funds were to be used to cover any operating deficits, non-recurring project payments, or any other cost deficit that was created by the pandemic. The township has spent $288,267 of the $565,863 they received in ARPA funds. The township used the funds to cover the payments on new flooring in the Town Hall, a new dump truck, broadband coverage for township residents, and a municipal water study.

The town board meets on the first and third Thursday of each month.
