Youth baseball teams on the way

More than 60 youth baseball teams will descend upon the Cloquet area this weekend to participate in the fifth annual Northland Baseball Classic. The tournament was the brainchild of Cloquet’s Nate Knutson, the current VFW coach, who was looking to bring teams to Cloquet and to build a top-notch tournament.

“We have now built a reputation as a very good tournament, and teams are electing to come here and play,” Knutson said. “There is very good competition and the tournament is getting to be known across the state and outside the state as well.”

More than 60 teams will compete at six age levels with games in the 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U age groups.

“Games will start on Friday at noon at Braun Park, and there will be games at Chub Lake Park in Carlton as well as Ed Mettner Field and Pinehurst Park,” Knutson said. “We have the Missouri River Nationals coming in, we have teams from Canada, Wisconsin and the Twin Cities, so there will really be some top teams coming in.”

Knutson also organized a VFW-age-group tournament, which featured eight teams two weeks ago.

“I really encourage people to come out and watch games, because there will be some amazing teams coming to the tournament,” he said.
