The Carlton Area Lions Club has been serving the Carlton area since 1972 and is one of 49,000 Lions clubs around the world. Members of the all-volunteer Carlton area club have resided in all corners of Carlton County, giving their time and energy to create a positive impact here and around the globe.

Club members spend much of their time raising funds to help support a number of causes. Fundraisers include their monthly Burger Night at the Carlton VFW, raffles, plant sales and more. Their next Burger Night is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.

Some of the projects and organizations the fundraisers support include providing scholarships, free eyeglasses and eye exams to community members in need, Can Do Canines, the MN Hearing Foundation, Lions Club International Foundation, Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation, the Spring Point diabetes project, and Leader Dogs for the Blind, among others.

True to its motto, "We Serve," the Carlton Area Lions Club serves the community with its highway cleanup efforts, volunteering at Carlton Daze, National Night Out and other events, offering free vision screening to area youth and collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids, planting trees and hosting recycling plastic to provide outdoor benches, creating wellness kits, hosting senior bingo throughout the year, and sponsoring events such as the International Peace Poster Contest for youth ages 11-13.

This year's International Peace Poster contest's theme is "Dare to Dream." All Carlton County students who will be 11, 12 or 13 years old on Nov. 15, 2023 can participate and register online at https://countyseattheater.com/art-gallery or at the Encore! Performing Arts Center and Gallery, 2035 Highway 33 South in Cloquet. There is no entry fee, and contest rules are provided upon registering. Poster board is available upon request at the gallery. Entries must be turned in at the Encore Gallery by Friday, Oct. 27.

The Carlton Area Lions Club is always seeking new members! Club meetings are at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the Carlton VFW. Meetings include dinner, presenters, and fellowship. If you are interested in attending a meeting to learn more about us, or have questions about the Peace Poster contest, please contact Lion Joel Soukkala at 218-451-0715 or email [email protected].
