DNR investigates carcasses

Conservation Officer Tony Elwell is investigating a report about beaver carcasses dumped on county land near Sawyer, said a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources weekly report. Upon visiting the location, Elwell observed beaver, otter, muskrat and pine marten carcasses that had all been pelted out. Several waterfowl, a ruffed grouse and a loon were found as well. “None of the game birds had been utilized,” the report said. The investigation is ongoing.

Also last week, Elwell provided assistance to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office with a medical call. Enforcement action was taken for various ATV-operation and registration violations, transporting a loaded firearm, and hunting license violations. Elwell fielded complaints pertaining to dogs chasing deer, possible hunter harassment, and University of Minnesota research live traps that were destroyed.

In Carlton, conservation officer Mikeena Wehr worked at the end of the firearms deer season. Enforcement action was taken for transporting a loaded firearm, insufficient blaze orange, and ATV violations. A welfare check was conducted on an 85-year-old hunter on the last day of the season.
