Once again, Zion Lutheran Church hosted the annual Christmas community dinner in Cloquet, bringing joy and an assortment of appetizers, meatballs, ham, mashed potatoes and more to hundreds of folks. Carol Marie Douglas, age 68, passed away suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at home. She was born Aug. 16, 1955, the daughter of Robert and Helen (Isakson) Douglas. Carol graduated from Carlton High School in 1973. She retired from Black Bear Casino in 2020, after many years. Carol was very active in the Carlton VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and she held many positions in the Auxiliary over the years. Robert Kenneth Calhoun, 67, of Carlton passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 at home with his wife by his side. Robert was born Jan. 30, 1956 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Robert and Dorothy Calhoun. Phyllis Tan, age 93, was born on Nov. 28, 1930 to Swan and Alma Peterson. She grew up on an 80-acre farm in Esko, Minnesota, the youngest of six children. Following her graduation from Esko High School, Phyllis attended UMD and received an elementary education degree in teaching. Cloquet police have lifted the shelter-in-place order issued in response to a shooting at the Super 8 hotel in Cloquet. Law enforcement officials confirmed three people died, including one person they believe was the shooter. Three people from three different cities were killed Monday in a suspected double murder/suicide at the Super 8 hotel in Cloquet that forced the evacuation of the hotel and a community lockdown as authorities searched for a suspect. The Cloquet Police Department released the names of those involved in the shooting at the Super 8 Motel on Monday, Jan. 8.
