    With a snowstorm looming, the Polar League high school track season kicked off indoors Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Although no team scores were kept, local track and field athletes impressed in both the boys and girls divisions. The boys 60-meter dash featured some of the top local talent in the area.     Swept in Alaska last weekend, the Minnesota Wilderness fell into fifth place in the Midwest Division standings — one point out of a playoff berth with six games to play. The Kenai River Brown Bears beat Minnesota, 4-1 and 5-2 on March 22 and Saturday, respectively, with the Wilderness falling into 2-0 holes in each game.   • Lions collect plastic for reuse

    One local service club is making reuse - of plastic bags and eyeglasses cases - a centerpiece of their charitable works. The Carlton Area Lions Club is working with Trex, a composite decking company, to turn donated plastic bags into benches placed around the county. "We've actually collected enough pounds to do 10 benches," said Rita White, the organizer of the drive. Shirley was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Moose Lake, the daughter of Clarence "Kelly" and Ruth (Olson) Paulson. Shirley graduated from Carlton High School and attended the Humboldt Institute of Minneapolis. She worked as a secretary at the Potlatch Corp. until she married her high school sweetheart, Dale R.
