The Gustafson family of Mahtowa has been named Carlton County's 2019 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota Extension office. The Gustafson farm began 115 years ago as a registered Guernsey dairy. In the early 1990s, the farm transitioned to Holstein dairy cows. One Minnesotan is dead following an ATV accident Sunday off South Finn Road in Lakeview Township. According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:06 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, Carlton County Dispatch received a report of an ATV accident. Elie Yang, age 36, from Brooklyn Center was riding up and down the driveway of the family cabin when he lost control and hit a tree. Yang was airlifted to Essentia in Duluth where he later died. Carlton County assessor Kyle Holmes said due to a clarification in the tax law during the recent legislative session, there is a new special refund provision for disabled veterans who were eligible but did not receive the veteran-with-a-disability homestead market value exclusion for assessment year 2016 or 2017. Kenneth Roy Tamillo, 87, of Cloquet, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 22, 2019, at the VA hospital in St. Cloud.
