  • County votes for change

    Pine Knot News|Nov 8, 2024

With all of Carlton County's 39 precincts reporting, the unofficial tallies from the 2024 general election brought some interesting results, including a win in the county for President-elect Donald Trump, who did not win Minnesota. The Republican was the top vote-getter - 50.1 percent to Vice President Kamala Harris' 47.6 percent - in a county that had nearly 90-percent voter turnout with more than 20,000 people submitting ballots. Voter turnout nearly matched the 92-percent mark made in 2020...

  • It'll be a sea change on Carlton board

    Ted Lammi|Nov 8, 2024

Two more pro-consolidation candidates were elected to the Carlton school board Tuesday. Challengers Ben Nilsen and Dan Solarz will join the board in January: both have indicated they strongly favor pairing with neighboring Wrenshall. Another advocate for a union with Wrenshall was Ryan Leonzal, who was re-elected Tuesday after winning a special election a year ago. Each of the winning candidates received over 20 percent of the vote, a strong showing in a race where voters could vote for up to three candidates. Leaving in January will be...

  • 20-year-old set to serve on Thomson board

    Jana Peterson|Nov 8, 2024

Nathan Barta is just 20, but he won in a landslide Tuesday, taking more than 50 percent of the vote for Thomson Township Supervisor Seat C while his opponents – Jaryn Edblad and John Bergman – garnered 27 and 22.6 percent. While the incoming Thomson supervisor is definitely the youngest person in Carlton County – or maybe even the state – to win election Tuesday, the University of Minnesota Duluth junior knows a thing or two about local politics. Two years ago he penned a guest column in the Pin...

  • Either way, Carlton taxpayers would pay

    Brady Slater|Nov 1, 2024

Whether the Carlton school district consolidates with Barnum or Wrenshall, taxpayers in Carlton face higher taxes, say a pair of financial reports acquired by the newspaper. Last week’s revelation that Carlton and Barnum officials were considering consolidation between school districts included reference to a pair of financial impact reports conducted for Carlton by a Roseville, Minnesota financial advisor of public institutions. The Pine Knot received what were similar 13-page reports generated this year from Ehlers Public Finance Advisors, d...

    Nov 1, 2024

A detached garage in Skelton Township caught fire and was a total loss Saturday, Oct. 26. According to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in at 1:27 p.m. reporting the fire at 3234 County Road 157 in Skelton Township. The caller indicated that no people or animals were in the garage and it was not close to the home. • It's four straight to State for Raptors

    Mike Creger|Nov 1, 2024

It can be difficult to know just what might inspire a teenager these days, but Brenda Knudsen may have found something in October. The trails on Pincushion Mountain offer spectacular views of the harbor at Grand Marais and the expanse of Lake Superior. As Knudsen prepared her Carlton/Wrenshall girls cross country teams for the Oct. 10 Polar League Conference meet on those trails, she told them she'd jump into the lake if they won. "It was freezing," the coach said this week, looking back on a...

  • Cloquet makes run to State

    Mike Creger|Nov 1, 2024

Despite finishing in the middle of the pack in last year's Section 7AA cross country meet, Cloquet boys team coach Chandra Allen had an inkling that things could only get better for the Lumberjacks. They were losing just one senior to graduation. "We knew after last season," she said of the 2024 prospects. The hunch was indeed correct, as this year's team won the section meet in Hibbing on Oct. 24. The team will now travel to St. Paul Saturday for the Minnesota State High School Class AA Cross...

  • Just two remain in football playoffs

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 1, 2024

After two rounds of playoffs, just two local football teams remain in the hunt for that elusive state tournament berth. Both of those teams, Moose Lake/Willow River and Cromwell-Wright, are rich in postseason success and were scheduled to play for section championships Thursday night, after the Pine Knot News went to press. The stunner in the second round was top-seeded Barnum falling, 22-14, in Section 7AA, to No. 4 Mesabi East. The Giants jumped on the Bombers in the first half and held a...

  • Esko, South Ridge hit semifinals

    Kerry Rodd|Nov 1, 2024

Section volleyball entered the semifinal round Wednesday night with Esko and South Ridge the only two remaining local teams in action. Section 7AA Esko was set to play Crosby-Ironton in the 7AA semifinals Wednesday night after picking up a pair of wins in the past week. On Oct. 23, No. 2 Esko opened with a 3-0 win over Pine City. "It was nice to get that first match win out of the way," said Esko coach Pete Stasiuk. "We played well, we didn't make a whole lot of errors and we generally played a...

    Nov 1, 2024

Joe Donald Bahen, 76, of Barnum, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 28, 1948, in Cloquet, the son of Joseph and Ellen Bahen. Joe was known for his quick wit and good sense of humor. He found great joy in cross-country skiing and exploring various trails. He was an accomplished guitarist and had a passion for collecting vintage guitars. • Highlights: Carlton County election results are in

    Jana Peterson|Nov 1, 2024

With all of Carlton County's precincts reported by 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, the 2024 local election brought some interesting results. The results won't be official until after they are canvassed, but changes are rare after reporting. Here are a few of the highlights: The mayor's race in Wrenshall is tied. Incumbent Gary Butala and challenger Jeff Bloom each have exactly 143 votes each. Two incumbent Carlton School Board members - Julianne Emerson and Eryn Szymczak - are out. Ryan Leonzal, an...

  • Surprise Carlton-Barnum consolidation talks draw fire

    Oct 25, 2024

Three of Carlton County's rural school districts were rocked by unexpected developments Monday. Members of the Barnum and Carlton school boards learned their administrators were proposing consolidation talks, while Wrenshall officials were surprised to find their partner in ongoing consolidation talks - Carlton - seemed to be abandoning them for another district. The news sparked anger, dismay and curiosity, along with a healthy dose of skepticism. Carlton school board member Ryan Leonzal was...

  • Wrenshall candidates show team spirit

    Brady Slater|Oct 25, 2024

Come the Nov. 5 general election, voters in Wrenshall will be saying hello to three new school board members. Barring a successful write-in campaign, the new faces will be the three candidates on the ballot - Jon Beck, Ashley Laveau and Erin Riley. The trio has gotten to know one another, and agreed to put all of their names onto one campaign sign. "Three open seats for three people," Riley said, "we figured we'd save resources." "We've all kind of talked and feel like we can work well...

  • Our View: Consolidation is suddenly on the ballot

    Oct 25, 2024

With the surprise entry of Barnum into the Carlton School Board consolidation talks this week and the uproar that followed, it would seem that consolidation really is on the ballot in Carlton on Nov. 5. While there is no formal question for voters, there is a clear choice between the five candidates for Carlton School Board in terms of whether or not they support continuing consolidation talks with Wrenshall. Board members pretty much staked out their positions during Monday’s Carlton School Board meeting. Chairwoman and candidate Julianne E...

  • Letter to the Editor: There's a worthy trio in Carlton race

    Oct 25, 2024

I would like to endorse and recommend Ben Nilsen, Ryan Leonzal and Dan Solarz for Carlton school board. Our current board has done a good job of brainstorming, thinking outside the box and implementing new ideas in an attempt to increase enrollment. There are great things happening at the high school and elementary, but we need students to increase revenue. I feel consolidation with Wrenshall is the best option and the current board members have been unable to make any progress with this. The fact that the four-day school week was passed in...

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote Boyechko, Peterson for SWCD

    Oct 25, 2024

I encourage you to vote for Michelle Boyechko and Gary Peterson for Carlton County Soil & Water Conservation District supervisors. Gary Peterson, of Barnum, has served as school teacher, coach and county commissioner. He is a long time SWCD supporter and cooperator and has worked with the district to improve forest health and wildlife habitat on his lands. He intends to continue working on watershed and environmental issues at the local level. He will do his best to support and encourage rural, sustainable family farms. Michelle Boyechko, of...

Look for more information on volleyball playoffs in next week’s Pine Knot News. • Section playoff field thins

    Kerry Rodd|Oct 25, 2024

Playoff football began Tuesday as a number of area teams tried to punch their ticket into the second round of sections. Class AAAA Cloquet made a valiant comeback against Duluth Denfeld in Duluth, falling short 28-20 on Tuesday. Denfeld came in as the No. 3 seed with a record of 5-3, while the Lumberjacks were the No. 6 seed with a record of 2-6. The two teams met in early October with the Hunters coming away with a 16-point win. Against Denfeld, the 'Jacks had the tall task of trying to slow...

  • Dan Kraker MPR News|Oct 25, 2024

When Jen Schultz won the first of her four House terms at Minnesota’s Capitol in 2014, she joined a stable of Democratic legislators from the area and the 8th Congressional District was in the party’s hands, too — albeit by a very narrow margin. A decade later, it’s a far different picture. Outside of her home base in Duluth, Republicans hold sway in much of northeastern Minnesota. And the 8th District has elected a Republican in U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber in three consecutive elections. Schultz, who left the Legislature after the 2022 session...  Website
