  • FDL leader seeks 'healthier community'

    Janis Fairbanks|Jul 12, 2024

There are no term limits for Reservation Business Committee members, once elected by the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa band members. That does not guarantee a lifelong career for those who hold office when band members decide to make a change, as happened with two of the three seats in the June 11 election. Newly elected RBC chairman Bruce Savage and returning District I Cloquet representative Wally Dupuis were officially sworn into office Friday, July 5, while Earl Otis, the new...

Smith told the...

  • Pay raised throughout sheriff's office

    Brady Slater|Jul 12, 2024

Law enforcement took center stage Monday at the Carlton County board’s first meeting in July. A series of public tours of the new $75 million Justice Center along County Road 61 in Carlton was announced for August. It was a surprising development, given an expected delay in the opening of a facility that will feature a courthouse, jail, and both sheriff’s and county attorney’s offices. “It’s so exciting,” board chair Susan Zmyslony said, later turning to jail administrator Paul Coughlin, who oversaw the multiyear construction project. “C...

The operator was going to leave two beaver dams alone and told Dahl about new ones popping up at other sites the county monitors. It was not an unusual call for the county’s department of transportation maintenance supervisor. “Once a week [we] have the excavator out opening all these sites,” Dahl said. “Looking at them, monitoring them, making that decision: Do we need to open it up? Four cats were dead by the time someone entered the apartment 18 days later. A fifth cat died the same day it was rescued and two cats were nursed back to health. • Dan Gunderson|Jun 28, 2024

Minnesota has long collaborated with tribal governments on water quality issues. But a new federal rule could give tribes a stronger voice in that process. The new Environmental Protection Agency rule is designed to protect the reserved rights of tribal members. Reserved rights are the rights to hunt, fish and gather resources. Tribes commonly reserved, or did not give up, those rights when they signed treaties ceding land to the federal government. “This rule is laying out a standard and a way for the EPA to require states to protect those r...  Website
