Have you ever seen coins lying on a headstone? Leaving a coin lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed. This tradition became popular in the United States during the Vietnam War as a way, it is believed, of showing respect without engaging in any uncomfortable political discussion.

The Cromwell-Wright Class of 2022 will have graduation Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m.

The fifth- and sixth-grade track and field day will also be on Friday, May 27 starting at 9 a.m.

There will be no school Monday, Memorial Day, May 30, and the last day of school is June 2.

The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 and a few members of the American Legion Post 503 from Floodwood will be at the Wright Park at 8 a.m. May 30 to honor our veterans. Scott Ferry, who passed away March 24 this year, will be the honored veteran. Scott was a U.S. Navy veteran. Bring your American flags and wear red, white and blue.

The Floodwood VFW and American Legion will also be at Fine Lakes Cemetery at 9 a.m., Van Buren at 10 a.m., Cedar Valley at 11 a.m. and the Hope Lutheran Cemetery at noon. Lunch at the Savannah in Floodwood to follow.

A Memorial Day honor guard will be at the Eagle Lake Cemetery at 7:30 a.m. and at Forest Hill at 7:55 a.m. Monday, May 30..

Our sympathies to the family of Sharon Shykes, 83, who passed away May 14, 2022. Sharon spent summers in Cromwell on Eagle Lake. A Funeral Mass was scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26.

Marion (Isaacks) Larsen passed away peacefully Friday, May 6, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer. Visitation is at 12 p.m. until the 1 p.m. memorial service Tuesday, May 31 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright.

Wendy, the new letter mail carrier on the Wright route, says you should put your flag up if you have outgoing mail, because if you don’t have mail on that day and you have outgoing mail, she won’t know to stop and pick it up if your flag isn’t up.

The Wright post office hours are 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7:45 a.m.-8:45 a.m. Saturdays. The lobby is open 24 hours a day for mail pickup. Call 357-2936 if you have questions.

The Carlton County Historical Society is in need of the following items: paper towels, toilet paper, toilet bowl cleaner, bathroom spray cleaner, 13-gallon kitchen trash bags, small 3M Command Strips, coffee and tea K-cups for Keurig machine, masking tape, canned air for cleaning tight spaces, clear packing tape, 25-ft measuring tape, soft cotton gloves for handling delicate items, and patterns for children’s pioneer clothing: sunbonnets, pinafores, vests and caps. These items can be dropped off during museum hours: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Fridays. The museum is closed Saturday-Monday.

Bethlehem Church in Wright will hold its rummage sale this August, so you can start gathering items for the sale.

Marcia Peterson wants to thank everyone who donated to the JDRF diabetes walk in honor of her grandson, Roland Peterson. They raised $4,670 and appreciate all the donations.

Pat Cain keeps herself busy crocheting afghans for the needy, and recently 27 of them were donated to the Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet for folks on dialysis. They were so thankful and also asked if folks could donate mittens or gloves, as the patients’ hands get so cold during the procedure. Drop off donations at Bethlehem on Sundays, or call a member of the women’s group to donate.
