  • Wright/Cromwell News

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jul 26, 2024

The 59th annual Wrong Days in Wright is now in the books. This year's event was one of the best ever. The parade set a new recent record, I think. Our thanks to Mark and Linda Dahlman for their leadership this year, and for all the volunteers, vendors, flea markets, steak fry cooks and servers, and those ran activities that all added to the event. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way. Now, let's make next year's 60th even bigger and better. With that in mind, please collect any Wrong...

  • What can go wrong will - in Wright

    Jana Peterson|Jul 19, 2024

One of the county's smallest cities will again hold its unique celebration Friday through Sunday, for the 59th year in a row. Almost nothing goes right at Wrong Days in Wright, and that's by design. Softball players bat opposite their usual stance, running to third base first, then second, first and home. Instead of bingo, folks play ognib. They also play cribbage, but they play to lose, not win. They even dress for the occasion. "You wear your clothes inside out, unmatching sox. Most of our...

  • Our View: Thumbs up, thumbs down

    Jul 19, 2024

THUMBS UP to Carlton County and the city of Cloquet for staying competitive when it comes to pay for law enforcement officers. Both jurisdictions saw their board and council, respectively, approve pay increases recently aimed at keeping wages comparable to those of surrounding departments and the local labor market. Nobody likes budget increases that stress tax levies. But, the alternatives are stark — losing peace officers to better-paying outfits and leaving our communities vulnerable. “The bigger issue is, if we can’t get qualified law e...

Well, I did it again. Last week I wrote the Wright news, and the wrong news. It was Scott Lehti, not Scott Hakamaki, who received the 2023 Carlton County Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of service with the Wright fire department and the Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District. Congratulations, Scott. To volunteer with the Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District, contact [email protected] or 218-644-3547 or 218-357-2080. All training is provided, no experience is needed, and the...

  • Fair weather, fast times at Sawdust

    Kerry Rodd|Jul 12, 2024

Impressive weather and equally impressive showings made for a great morning on July Fourth as the Sawdust 5K run/walk was held again in the Pinehurst Park area of Cloquet. "It was an awesome day and the weather couldn't have been better," said Sam Jacobson, who is co-race director along with his wife, Julie. "It was a little humid, but times were fast and we had good numbers." More than 300 runners participated July 4, but the most impressive run was turned in by former Proctor and University...

Congratulations to Deb Nobis, who was honored as the 2023 Carlton County EMS Person of the Year. Deb is known as Mrs. Reliable — when the tones go off, there’s a good chance Deb is responding to the call. She has excelled at mentoring new members, serving in any role asked of her, and simply making the department a better place. Scott Hakamaki received the 2023 Carlton County Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of service with the Wright fire department and the Cromwell-Wright Area Fir...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jul 5, 2024

Last week I almost got scammed out of $249. I got a call from what the guy said was DirecTV, and he informed me of a great rate on my satellite service that would be a one-time charge of $249, and my service charge would not go up for the next five years. Well, I should have known better, but he was very convincing. Then he told me to turn off my TV — which should have been a red flag, and he would reset the satellite box and all I had to do was give him my credit card info, so I did. Later, I...

  • Band is the hit in this year's parade

    Jana Peterson|Jun 28, 2024

The Cloquet Community Band will be the grand marshal of the Cloquet Fourth of July parade next week. The volunteer band will still play in the parade, like they have every July Fourth parade held over the past 25 years — including two years ago, when the parade was canceled due to lightning. They had to head back to a garage in the West End of Cloquet anyway, so the band and the VFW float “made a parade of two” going down Cloquet Avenue, said music director Lynne Putzke. “The people who were sti...

Special music was provided by Mia and Jace Hakala on the violin and guitar, Pastor John Scheuer on the...

  • Wright Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Jun 21, 2024

A weak tornado touched down in Beseman Township last Wednesday, June12. I was home at the time, and the rain came down in sheets, along with the high winds whipping the trees around in my yard. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized several large trees came down on the north side of my driveway, blocking the road. My brother Mark Dahlman came over and cut the tree limbs back far enough for me to get out, but there will still be lots of logging to do to clean up the mess. Mark also info...

  • Broadband buildout begins

    Brady Slater|Jun 14, 2024

Erik Peterson does what he loves, consulting for grassroots advocacy in agriculture, the environment and social justice. It finds him regularly doing work with people all over the world, including as far away as Australia. All of it he does from his home off North Cloquet Road in Esko, since 2009. For some tasks, he's got to make sure his wife is not on the computer, so that his internet connection through telephone lines isn't disrupted. It was years before the Petersons learned that not all...

  • Cromwell chief is fired

    Jana Peterson|Jun 14, 2024

Longtime Cromwell Wright Area Fire District chief Lucas Goodin is no longer with the department after being dismissed by the CWAFD board earlier this spring. In response to a public data request from the Pine Knot News, attorney Donald Erickson shared that Goodin was dismissed as chief and a member of the fire district for several reasons, including: • Payroll and timecard theft: Goodin was accused of signing into his time card electronically and then changing the time to an earlier start time, on at least four occasions, added time that he w...

The Cromwell community thanks Terry and Peggy Olson and family for putting up all the American flags on veteran graves for Memorial Day. Remembering our veterans with flags is a great tradition. Take time to fly the flag on Flag Day, June 14. Several area folks motored to Pine River on June 8 to celebrate Ryanne Schultz’s graduation from high school and college. Ryanne got a two-year community college degree along with her high school diploma, all while working part time in her junior and s...

    Kerry Rodd|Jun 14, 2024

Kerry Rodd [email protected] Carlton County was well-represented last weekend at the Class A Minnesota State High School League's boys and girls track and field state meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School. While there was no state champion from the area this season, a number of athletes made the finals and medaled for being in the top 10 places. Barnum's Annaka Bogenholm had the best state meet of all area athletes by finishing third in the discus in Class A and seventh in the shot...

  • Filings for office close

    Brady Slater|Jun 7, 2024

The candidate filing period for political races subject to a primary election ended on Tuesday, yielding a ballot with more than a few surprises. In Cloquet, councilors Lara Wilkinson, Iris Keller, Kerry Kolodge and Lyz Jaakola will all run unopposed, barring a write-in campaign mounted against any of them, on the Nov. 5 ballot. In Carlton County, the commissioners’ races are a tale of three different outcomes. To replace outgoing Dick Brenner in District 1, representing west Cloquet, Scanlon and Sawyer, Sarah Plante Buhs and Caleb Dunlap will...

I was able to attend the Floodwood’s graduation on May 31. This class has been very special to me, as I have subbed for them since kindergarten. When you are a substitute teacher, you follow them all the way through their school years, and many of them become special friends. I’d like to share the following poem with them and all our area seniors: To the Class of 2024: I’m glad I was your teacher, and I will miss you so. I can’t believe the end is here. I hate to let you go. Remember all the...
