Wright Cromwell News

Welcome, summer — it arrived Tuesday, June 21, with the longest day of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere. I had heard you can balance an egg on its narrow end on the first day of summer due to the rotation and revolution of the earth. We’ve tried it and managed to balance several eggs on June 21 in the past. And now that summer is here, it’s heat, heat, heat, and a mosquito invasion. What next? Oh, yeah, a bear got my bird feeders, too.

Bill and Judy Haapoja will be singing at the Villa Vista 6-7 p.m. June 27. The public is encouraged to attend.

The next area blood drive will be held 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 29. All appointments need to be made with Ray Lally at 218-644-3739, as they cannot be made online.

There will be a bell ringing ceremony at the Villa Vista starting at noon Thursday, June 30, followed by a picnic lunch for all in attendance at 1 p.m. This is the eighth annual ringing of the freedom bells at Villa Vista and Cardinal Court. Remember to wear red, white and blue, and bring bells to ring, as the public is encouraged to attend this event. This will also be the Young Old Timers July gathering — so, members, please attend this event.

First-class postage goes up to 60 cents July 10, so get some extra Forever stamps and save a few cents. The Forever stamps you already have are still good and no additional postage needs to be added. Remember, a penny saved is a penny earned. My mom used to say pennies make dollars, and dollars make sense.

The 11th annual Kaleb Anderson Walk/Run will be held 7-10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2 at Cromwell Park. It starts with a pancake breakfast, and a balloon release will follow the completion of the 5K. Cost: $25 for adults, $15 for kids 10 and under. Contact Jen Anderson at 218-390-3214 or [email protected] with any questions, or to volunteer or be a sponsor.

The Cromwell Class of 1961 will celebrate its 61st-year reunion at the Buffalo House in Duluth on July 13, starting at 1 p.m. with a social gathering.

Save the dates: Wrong Days will be celebrated July 15-17 this year. Buttons as well as $2 raffle tickets are available at the Co-op and Kalli’s Place. Volunteers are needed to go around the area communities and gather prizes for the Saturday button drawings. Call me at 218-357-2385 if you can help.

I’m sorry to report that our former Lutheran pastor Ed Nieman is now in hospice. Send cards and letters to him at 13859 Quinn St. N.W., Andover MN 55340.
