Obituary: Rose Marie Schmidt

Rose Marie Schmidt, 94, of Carlton passed away Sept. 8, 2022, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton surrounded by her family. She was born March 29, 1928, in Duluth to Rose (Blotti) and Carl Conito.

Rose grew up in West Duluth with 10 siblings. She attended Denfeld High School. She married Charles Schmidt on June 21, 1947, and they began their large family in Duluth before relocating to Carlton in 1957. Charles preceded Rose in death in 2002. Rose was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. She worked as a paraprofessional for South Terrace Elementary School and also volunteered at the Community Memorial Hospital gift shop for many years. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Italian American Club. Her hobbies included bingo, playing slots at the casino, crocheting, and playing cards and board games. She especially loved dressing up for Halloween and seeing the kids in costumes. She was known for her genuine love for people and a smile that could always light up the room.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles; daughter Susan Johnson; son Chuck Schmidt; six brothers and three sisters. Rose is survived by daughters Debra (Gene Paul) Nesgoda, Gina (Scott) Gotelaere, Jill (David) Hatfield and Stephanie (Del) Dunbar; sons Jeffrey (Joan), Scott (Paula) and Greg (Kerry Schroeder) Schmidt; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and sister Kate Kopari.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 13 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery in Carlton. Nelson Funeral Care assisted the family.
