Activist and tribal elder Skip Sandman passes

November 4, 2022

Former Congressional candidate and Fond du Lac Lake Superior of Ojibwe elder Ray "Skip" Sandman died Sunday, Oct. 30, at the age of 68. Sandman grew up on the Fond du Lac Reservation in the town of Brookston and attended AlBrook High School. In the spring of 2022, Skip walked his first stage after earning his degree from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.

Sandman was motivated by a dream to help others, which led to his entry into politics: he ran for the Duluth city council and twice entered the race for the 8th Congressional District as a Green Party candidate, advocating for the protection of the water for the future generations.

Traditional Midewiwin funeral rites began with a wake on Wednesday and funeral Thursday morning, with burial at Indian Hill Cemetery with military honors.
