Obituary: Janice E. Nelson

Janice E. Nelson, 78 of Duluth, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Proctor. She was born May 10, 1944, in Duluth, the daughter of Verner and Lucille (Anderson) Ostman. Janice attended school in Alborn and graduated from AlBrook High School.

She married Ronald Nelson on April 14, 1962, and together they raised two children. Janice was the U.S. postmaster for 30 years in Canyon and Pine River, Minnesota, and an officer in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. She and her husband, Ron, owned and operated the Canyon Center (gas station, convenience store and motel) for 10 years and Al's Mileage Gas Station for six years. Janice and Ron enjoyed wintering in Branson, Missouri, and she loved reading, playing cards, music, and dancing. She especially enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Janice was also a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Canyon.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers-in-law and two nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her, especially her husband of 60 years, Ronald; her children, Lisa (Larry) Amberg and Curtis (Kim) Nelson; grandchildren, Steve Amberg, Stephanie (Darren) Hanson, Andrew (Jessica) Nelson, Christopher (Kailli) Nelson, Brooke (Kenyon) Tader and Dustin (Becca) Nelson; great-grandchildren, Wyatt, David, Will, Jaspur and Mira, and a great-granddaughter expected in February; two brothers, Jim and Roger (Kathy) Ostman; two sisters, Beverly Matuszak and Linda (John) Valla; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 12 p.m. memorial service Saturday, Nov. 26 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. A lunch reception will follow in the Fellowship Room.
