Responders busy on Saturday

A spate of incidents late Saturday afternoon, July 8, kept emergency responders busy as they reacted to an ATV crash, vehicle crash and house fire all within a half hour of each other.

The first call was just after 4 p.m. for an ATV crash in the Nemadji State Forest in Holyoke Township. Driver Amanda Kelly, 41, and Molly Jaski, 10, were riding on the Harliss Trail when the ATV lost traction in sand and ended up sliding into a tree. Both sustained injuries and were sent to a hospital. Their condition is unknown, and no charges filed.

Minutes later, a call came in about a crash in Carlton near South Terrace. The 16-year-old driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Suburban was attempting to turn off of County Road 3 to County Road 1 at a T-intersection. The Suburban driver proceeded in front of a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica that was southbound on County Road 1 and the two vehicles collided head on.

Four people were sent to area hospitals for unknown injuries. There are no pending charges at this time, and no updates regarding the condition of those transported to area hospitals.

At about 4:30 pm. Saturday, a house fire was reported in Barnum Township, on Grizzly Lane, just northeast of Bear Lake. Homeowners Adam and Laura Mangan reported smoke was coming from the 4,109-square-foot home. According to the sheriff’s office, Laura rescued their 1-year-old son from inside the home, which eventually was considered a total loss from the fire. Laura was treated for slight burns and smoke inhalation. The state is investigating the cause of the fire.

Chief deputy Dan Danielson said the sheriff’s office increases its patrols on the weekends to effectively respond “to the multitude of emergencies that arise.”

They also rely on law enforcement and emergency response agency partners when responding to a 911 call.

“For example, in all three incidents, we received support from our local fire and EMS resources, as well as the State DNR and the Minnesota State Patrol (during the ATV crash specifically),” he said. “As always, we encourage our residents and visitors to exercise due care when recreating or simply traveling to and from home.”
