During the teen years, his brother Jim piqued Dan's interest in archery, and at the age of 13 he became the Minnesota State junior archery champion. He continued to win awards in the more skilled men's division as well.
His interest was also piqued when a sweet junior high school girl, Janet Juntunen, caught his eye. She became his wife on Sept. 19, 1964. They were married for 54 years and were blessed with two sons.
Ray Wirtz gave Dan his first job at the local gas station. For a short time he worked at Meadowbrook Dairy, then worked at the Northwest Paper mill for 10 years. He then entered the building and construction trade, and eventually supervised the designing of precast concrete forms for Del Zotto Products until he retired.
Dan was a hardworking problem solver, generous and always willing to lend a hand. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
He is survived by sons Keith and Tom (Angie); grandchildren, Bailey, Lindsay, Derek, Travis, Rachel and Ryan;
sisters, Verna Flynn, Ethel Lewis and Edie Blazevic; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers Jim and Ed.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a food bank or charity.
Visitation: 3 p.m. until the 5 p.m. Celebration of Life on Friday, Oct. 27 at Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Supper fellowship will follow. A private inurnment will be held.
