Jonathan Robert Carlson was born on May 14, 1939, to Edwin and Mayme (Koivisto) Carlson in Soudan, Minnesota. Jon grew up on the Iron Range in the Tower-Soudan area. He graduated from Tower-Soudan High School. Following graduation, Jon served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Jon furthered his education by attending college at the University of Minnesota, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration. Jon was a member of the Cloquet American Legion Post #262 and was a member of the Sierra Club. He was very intentional about staying in touch with his family. Jon cared deeply about equity, whether it was for climate change or for reproductive rights. Jon passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, at the age of 84.
Jon is survived by his children, Emily Siegrist of Wisconsin and Adam Carlson of California; grandchildren, Caroline Siegrist and Elias Siegrist; sister, Joan Lamppa; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Mayme; and brothers, Edwin, Bruce, and Brian.
