The fifth annual Northland Baseball Classic held last weekend featured 56 teams playing a total of 126 games. Champions were crowned in six age classes and games were played at Braun Park, Ed Mettner Field and Pinehurst Park in Cloquet and Chub Lake Park in Carlton. Competition turned to camaraderie June 20 at Wade Stadium in Duluth as the Polar League held its softball and baseball all-star games with players selected from league teams. In softball, Team Blue had a three-run sixth inning to put away Team Silver 5-1. Youth hockey players choose teams for an afternoon shinny game on the new and improved outdoor rink behind the Pine Valley Ice Arena Dec. 16. Members of the Cloquet Area Hockey Association and even some high school students tore down the old boards and dug up the ground below the rink this summer to create a bigger and better rink.
