    Local high school cross country runners got a chance to shake off the rust last Thursday with the annual Chub Lake meet, which is all about having fun and getting a chance to run.     Formed in 2021, next weekend will mark the second year Esko has had anglers in the state championships. It's quite an accomplishment for the startup program. "It all started a few years ago with my son Noah, who found out about this being a sport," said Esko coach Bill Wells.     A year ago, the Esko football team was an offensive juggernaut that finished 11-1 with their only loss coming against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the quarterfinals of the State Class AAA Football Tournament. There were 13 seniors on the 2022 roster, including six who will be playing college football this fall. Esko will look to reload and make another run to the state tournament.     Over the summer, the Cloquet High School outdoor athletic facilities have been transformed. This week saw another milestone in the $4.9 million project, as workers began installing bright green turf on the shared football and soccer field.     The Esko Legion and Junior Legion baseball teams got off to a slow start this summer, but they had an excellent excuse. "We missed the first 10 days of the season because of the long run to the state championship by the high school team," said Nick Legarde, head coach of both the Legion and Junior Legion teams.     More than 40 local athletes participated in the Minnesota Boys and Girls State Track meet last weekend at St. Michael-Albertville. A number of those athletes had top showings and made it to the finals. Class AA boys Miles Fischer had a big day for Cloquet by finishing in third place in the 1,600 meter run.     The Esko baseball team is on the verge of a state championship after two wins in the Minnesota Class AA Baseball Tournament in St. Cloud.
