  • Archer aims to make his mark

    Jana Peterson|Aug 4, 2023

"Thunk," goes the arrow as it hits the target, nearly 55 yards away. It's almost impossible to see, but Kyle Olson can tell by sound how well he shot. "A soft thunk means it's in the middle, because that's been hit the most," he said. At the age of 65, Carlton archer Kyle Olson is taking aim at his biggest target yet: competing with the U.S. national team on the international stage as a barebow archer in the men's 50-plus category. To achieve that, he has to compete at a minimum of five USA...

  • On the Mark: FinnFest tour was a real North Shore treat

    Ann Markusen|Aug 4, 2023

Last week, hundreds of locals and visitors, some from abroad, journeyed to Duluth to celebrate Finnish culture and its enduring presence in our communities. It was challenging to choose among many options: talks, films, presentations, musical performances, dancing, Finnish food and drink. Husband Rod Walli and I chose to join the daylong bus trip up the North Shore, offered by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor emeritus Arnold Alanen. At the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, we... Full story

  • Harry's Gang: Accidental discoveries

    Pete Radosevich|Aug 4, 2023

Sydney J. Harris was a columnist I read as a kid in the Duluth News Tribune. One of my favorite recurring columns was his “Things I Learned En Route to Looking Up Other Things.” I suppose a newspaper columnist, like a personal injury and divorce lawyer like me, is often looking up things and accidentally discovering interesting facts. Here’s some of mine from the past year or so: • The city of Minneapolis, due to the occupational hazards associated with milling, became a national powerho...

    Steve Korby|Aug 4, 2023

The Rosen siblings held a family reunion last weekend to coincide with the club's 100-year celebration. Bob and Aletha were their parents. They were both from the little town of Perham but did not meet until they were both at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in North Chicago during World War II. I delved into the history of the club for a special 20-page booklet, produced with the Pine Knot News and Northern Printery. It all started thanks to Illinois entrepreneur Rudolf... Full story

    Jana Peterson|Aug 4, 2023

When someone sets the record for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra, there isn't a ton of drama. That's because there's only a handful of people at the finish line. Justin Stewart finished the 50-mile race in 6 hours, 38 minutes, and 34 seconds Saturday, more than 45 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher. He was greeted by race director Sam Frey - who accompanied Stewart's finish with a cowbell while other volunteers cheered. Thank you to the Carlton Area Chamber, local businesses and volunteers for making the celebration a success. The 29th annual 5K had great weather for the 130 walkers and runners participating in the race. I spent Saturday afternoon walking through the car show, visiting with friends and having lunch at one of the many food trucks. (This is a time when the diet goes out the window.) Sunday's parade...
