  • Hats off to the senior dance

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Apr 26, 2019

As Fleta Carol swirled around the dance floor last week, it was her head that drew the eye first. Easter eggs dangled from the brim of her brightly colored hat, and a large stuffed blue and white toy bird perched high above the eggs and bright yellow paper tendrils. Carol wasn't the only one with a bird on her head. Bette Upton's straw hat featured a garland of flowers with a tiny, but more realistic-looking, redbird on top. Carol and Upton took first- and second place in the annual hat contest...

It’s official, ice-out season is in, and open waters are coming our way! Dedicated water enthusiasts are ready to pry their way out the door and itching for their chance to get out to enjoy the season. But with all the time we spend enjoying our waterways, how many of us think to give back to help preserve our favorite escapes? Cliché as it might sound, with great enjoyment comes great responsibility. And, more than ever, we really need everybody’s participation to help maintain our wate...

  • Life jackets a safety necessity when boating on cold water

    Apr 26, 2019

With waterways across the state clearing of ice, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds eager boaters that wearing a life jacket is a critical safety necessity during the spring “cold water” season. While boaters should always wear life jackets no matter the water temperature or season, public safety officials stress wearing a life jacket — not just having it on the boat — is the one action that significantly increases the chances of surviving a fall into cold water. “The shock of falling into cold water triggers your gasp reflex...

  • Early riser gets the bird

    Apr 26, 2019

The moon was perched high above, casting long shadows across the front yard. I quickly gathered all the information I needed. The skies were clear, and the limbs silhouetted against the horizon stood motionless. Warm and clear and calm. I shut the alarm off; it would prove redundant. I was up. Soon I would rouse my youngest son Josh from his slumber. This morning he would experience the turkey woods firsthand. Chasing turkeys is uniquely suited to introducing youngsters to hunting. The weather i...

  • DNR offers tips for avoiding conflicts with bears

    Apr 26, 2019

Homeowners are reminded to be aware of bears this spring and check their property for food sources that could attract bears. “Bears are roaming around now with the loss of snow and warmer weather, so interactions with people have started in many areas of Minnesota,” said Eric Nelson, wildlife damage program supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources. As bears emerge from hibernation, their metabolism gradually ramps up and they will begin looking for food at a time when berries and green vegetation can be scarce. Remove attractants suc...

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot news Sports|Apr 26, 2019

Fittingly named, the Esko Vortex track meet was held April 16 at the Esko Sports Center. Many of the local schools participated in one of their first outdoor meets of the year and there were plenty of big results. On the girls side, Zoie Johnson of Esko won the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 6 inches. She followed up with a second-place effort in the discus with a throw of 101 feet, behind South Ridge-Cherry-Northwoods-Northeast Range sophomore Elle Ridge, who had a throw of 103-5....

  • Cloquet Country Club opens soon for 96th season

    Steve Korby, Pine Knot News|Apr 26, 2019

For many area residents, the traditional media hype over the opening of Gordy's Hi-Hat restaurant on Highway 33 is a true and welcome sign of spring (especially since it typically opens the first day of spring). For some, it may be seeing the first robin of the year or putting out the dock and preparing for the opening of the walleye fishing season. But regional golfers know spring is really here when they can dust off the clubs, put away the snowblower and head to their favorite golf course. Fo...

  • Cloquet softball off to a strong start among weather woes

    Pine Knot News staff|Apr 26, 2019

The Cloquet girls softball team had to rely on their next-door neighbors, the Eskomos, to finally get a game outside. After recent snow and rain made their home field unusable, the Lumberjacks and Eskomos moved the Cloquet home game to Esko after a heroic effort by the Esko coaching staff and others to make their field playable last Thursday. The Lumberjacks took the opening game with a win, 10-5, and then followed up with a 9-2 home win on Tuesday over Duluth East. Against Esko, the 'Jacks...

  • Lumberjacks dominate conference meet

    Kerry Rodd, Pine Knovt Sports|Apr 26, 2019

It seems Mother Nature is the most formidable foe for Northland track and field, as the weather is the only thing slowing down the Lumberjacks this spring. With 140 kids on the varsity roster and another 80 on the middle school roster, the Cloquet program just keeps growing in number and talent, according to head coach Tim Prosen, who said he's been very pleased with their progress, despite having only one outdoor meet going into the last week of April. "We have lots of new young kids this...

The Bulldogs lost their first three games of the season to Northwoods, South Ridge and, last Thursday, to Moose Lake...
