    Mike Creger|May 13, 2022

Bridget Peterson, a media specialist at the schools in Esko, held a door open for two elementary students on Tuesday. One of them said: "Thank you for being yellow." Peterson beamed. "That was so cool." "Yellow" has been the code word for kindness the past few weeks at the elementary school in a courtesy and kindness campaign dubbed "Be the Yellow," based on a national and worldwide campaign launched by a teacher in honor of one of his colleagues. "I'm the instigator," admitted kindergarten...

  • Animal disease stirs debate

    Dan Reed|May 13, 2022

Chronic wasting disease is spreading in deer farms and, to a lesser extent, among wild deer in Minnesota and across the country. While there has been no CWD documented in Carlton County, a positive case in the city of Grand Rapids in March, and issues with a Beltrami County farm last year, have the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources looking at a statewide approach to disease surveillance, management, control and education. The fatal neurological disease affects the cervid family - deer,... Full story

  • No Mow May Is Here

    Pine Knot News|May 13, 2022

Carlton County commissioners voted last month to support a "No Mow May" to help bees and other pollinators, as they are struggling with habitat loss, neonicotinoid use, pathogens and parasites. By encouraging people to wait until June to mow their yards and other outdoor spaces, pollinators can take advantage of early spring flowers (yes, including dandelions) as they emerge from the unusually long hibernation this spring....

  • Fire crew loses dog

    Jana Peterson|May 13, 2022

Cloquet Area Fire District firefighters lost more than an arson detection dog when K-9 Wish was euthanized Monday, they lost a friend. A mix of golden retriever and Labrador, Wish had been with the fire district and her handler, Jason Maki, for nine years. She and Maki were certified on May 9, 2013, and she served enthusiastically - nosing out arson cases - until recently, when her health began to fail unexpectedly. She was diagnosed with advanced cancer and died Monday, exactly nine years from...

"We see many patients traveling from the Cloquet area to receive high-quality care at our facilities in Duluth and Moose Lake. By opening this clinic, we are eliminating barriers and making...

The Thomson Township board of supervisors approved crack sealing and restriping for both the town hall building parking lot and the fire department’s parking lot, along with other roads throughout the township, during their meeting Thursday, May 5. The crack repair, sealing, and restriping of the parking lots has not been done since before the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to township engineer Joe Jurewicz. Some board members were concerned about the price increase from previous repairs, but Jurewicz assured them the township i...

  • Hospital's super volunteer retires

    Mike Creger|May 13, 2022

Luckily for the Cloquet community, Darlene Carter has a propensity to get bored. Or "lonely, I guess," she said this month as she was honored for 45 years of volunteer service at Community Memorial Hospital, which this year will mark 64 years in existence. "She has given half of her life to the hospital - remarkable," said Rick Breuer, the CEO and administrator at the hospital. "She's a one-of-a-kind saint." "You have to stop sometime," she said with a slight chuckle after her final day. "It's...

  • Forestry center featured in National Geographic

    Mike Creger|May 13, 2022

The Cloquet Forestry Center has hit the big time. Well, it really has already made a name for itself in scientific circles. Researchers there are always happy to share what they are working on and when National Geographic came calling, they were more than agreeable to talk about its decade of work on deciphering just what northern Minnesota's forests may look like as the climate changes. Two photographs taken from the forestry center are featured in an article in the May edition of National... Full story

    Dan Reed|May 13, 2022

Carlton County commissioners got a taste of some of the challenges they will face in crafting a budget for 2023 at Tuesday’s board meeting. “Fuel costs are at $4 and rising,” said county coordinator Dennis Genereau. “The rise of gas and fuel prices impacts everything we do in the programs we run.” Genereau explained that the costs to run the new justice center are still in the planning stage. Another groundskeeper and at least a couple of custodians are being considered. Additional staff for the Sheriff’s Office and the court system are...

  • Our View: Kindness can win every time

    May 13, 2022

There’s a lot to be questioned when it comes to the human capacity for kindness. There is much to consider in world events and politics, especially if you follow too closely on social media. It makes one wonder what kindness in your own sphere can possibly matter. We resort to the butterfly effect, and, really, to the purpose of the Pine Knot. We are extremely focused on what happens right here, right now. That shrinks things a bit, and opens the possibility that one kind gesture could have an impact. It could spread, and make our own b...

  • On The Mark: Music is elixir for gray spring days

    Ann Markusen|May 13, 2022

It’s been a chilly, damp, dark stretch, from early March through April. The beautiful winter ice for skating melted months ago. Snow for skiing disappeared in bits and drabs. Purple finch and white-throated sparrows have returned, ravenous for sunflower seeds and peanut butter, along with the resident chickadees, woodpeckers and nuthatches. The trilling red-winged blackbirds are turning up too. How have we made it through those dismal weeks? Besides trying out lots of new recipes and l...

  • Letters To The Editor: Vote for a thoughtful candidate

    May 13, 2022

I was appalled to read that Jeff Dotseth is campaigning on his support for “Stand Your Ground” laws. After this past winter’s local experience of a citizen being severely injured in a road rage incident, it should be clear to all that vigilantism isn’t a good idea for our community. We have a professional, qualified, and trained police force whose job it is to protect us, and a legal system whose job it is to protect the innocent and punish the offenders. Citizens taking the law into their own hands whenever another person seems “scary... Full story

  • Esko, Cloquet dominate True Team

    Kerry Rodd|May 13, 2022

Cloquet High School hosted the Section 7AA True Team meet on Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies and temperatures that zoomed into the 80s. It was the first real warm day for track athletes, giving them a chance to show their abilities. "It was kind of a day out of character as far as how this spring has gone," said Cloquet coach Tim Prosen. "It has been a rough start to the track season as far as the weather goes, but today (Tuesday) it was beautiful." The True Team meet was established in 1987... Full story

  • Plan for opener success this year

    Bret Baker|May 13, 2022

A couple of weeks ago I predicted the 2022 fishing opener could be fantastic. As the big day approaches and the weather forecast solidifies, I’m sticking to my guns. I believe the May 14th Minnesota opener will be one of the best opening days in recent memory. For walleyes, the most predictable opener locations will be in and around spawning grounds. In lakes, focus on any rivers or inlets that dump into the main lake. Walleyes will congregate in the shallow bays and points around these s... Full story

Last Thursday six area boys and girls track teams met in Esko for the Esko Sports Alliance Showcase Invitational track meet. In the end the Esko boys and girls dominated to take first place, but there were plenty of amazing performances to go around. Perhaps the most impressive performance was turned in by the Esko boys 4x100 relay team which ran a state best and school record: 43.57. Relay team members were Braden Lowe, Carter Zezulka, Mason Perich and Makoi Perich. "People don't know how... Full story
