  • Esko sweeps rival Cloquet

    Dwight Cadwell|Sep 27, 2019

After losing two sets earlier this year to Esko, Cloquet was hoping to rebound Tuesday night as the Eskomos and the Lumberjacks met in a cross- town rivalry match at the Cloquet Middle School. Esko defeated Cloquet 2-0 in the North Branch Tournament less than two weeks ago and continued with their impressive season as they defeated Cloquet 25-17, 25-21, and 25-16 to improve to 13-4 overall on the season. The host Lumberjacks saw their season record drop to 6-10. The Eskomos' losses have all come...

  • Let's play hockey

    Kerry Rodd|Sep 27, 2019

The Minnesota Wilderness opened the North American Hockey League season with a bang this past week. After losing the opening game on Wednesday, the Wilderness exploded to win three straight games at the NAHL Showcase tournament in Blaine. On Wednesday, the Wilderness opened with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Topeka to open the tournament. Nate Horn scored the lone goal for the Wilderness and goaltender Ryan Ouellette made 18 saves in a valiant effort for the Cloquet-based squad. "Topeka was a tough...

  • CEC results mixed as season ramps up

    Dennis Genereau|Sep 27, 2019

Boys and girls high school soccer seasons are generally pretty compact. This year is no different, with the the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team playing its first game Aug. 23 and its last regular season game scheduled for Oct. 3, a day shy of six weeks. What this means is sometimes having to play several games in close succession, something the Lumberjacks faced this past week as they competed in five games over eight days. While they finished a respectable 2-3 over that period against...

    Pine Knot News|Sep 27, 2019

Cloquet runners were among 176 competing in thier division at the Milaca Megameet Sept. 21 at Stone’s Throw Golf Course in Milaca. In the boys varsity D2 category, the Cloquet boys claimed fourth, with a score of 124, just 20 points behind the third-place St. Cloud team. The Cloquet boys were led by Jordan Allen, whose third-place finish in 17:09.4 was exceptional. Allen said the race was a good confidence booster, but the senior said he still has a lot to do. “All I can really do is buckle down and keep working hard with everyone else,” he sa...

  • Water, woods are par for this course

    Steve Korby|Sep 27, 2019

Tucked a few miles west of the Moose Lake, on beautiful Sand Lake, is the Moose Lake Golf Club. Established in 1929, this nine-hole club is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. For my Carlton County Golf Course update, I interviewed club manager Josh Gamst. According to course history, Moose Lake Golf Club was originated by a banker (Richard Lewis), an attorney (Clayton Dodge), and a dentist (Elmer Williams). The three, along with community supporters, were able to purchase the Romanoski...

  • Pine Knot Outdoors: Dallying is no option under a revered Harvest Moon

    Bret Baker|Sep 27, 2019

I stood parallel to the Cloquet goal line cheering on the hometown Lumberjacks football team Friday night under the lights of Bromberg Field. The moon struggled to break through the thick white clouds intermixed with the blue smoke rolling off the B&B wagon. It finally busted free over the visitor's goalposts. I noted the time: 8:30 p.m. on the nose. The Harvest Moon. It only rolls around once a year, so I knew I needed to take full advantage of its presence. (For the record, the Lumberjacks...

  • Wrenshall News

    Anne Dugan|Sep 27, 2019

Brian DePew said "seeing contemporary art in a barn next to an organic farm in northern Minnesota is not the way I thought I would be ending my evening," DePew, the executive director of the Center for Rural Affairs located in Lyons, Neb., went on: "But I couldn't have imagined a more wonderful end to the day". DePew was in Wrenshall Tuesday night along with 20 other fellows from BALLE, which stands for Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. The best description of what they are about cam...

  • Culverts are hidden watershed wonders

    Kim Samuelson|Sep 27, 2019

Several weeks ago, the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) sponsored a tour of the Nemadji Watershed to highlight the parts of a watershed and how they work together. Stops included forests, streams, farms, and culverts. What do culverts have to do with a watershed? Quite a lot, actually. Culverts are something that most of us seldom think about or even notice in our surroundings. Culverts are barely given a glance by people unless they are plugged by debris or blocked by ice....

  • Poet shares music and lore of Finnish immigrants

    Pine Knot News|Sep 27, 2019

For a woman raised in Minnesota, poet and musician Diane Jarvenpa has gained a pretty decent following in her grandparents' homeland of Finland, where she is known as "Minnesotan Satakieli," or the Minnesota Nightingale. Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jarvenpa will read from her latest book of poems, "The Way She Told Her Story" and perform on the kantele, a traditional Finnish stringed instrument that is plucked, at the Cloquet Public Library. Jarvenpa said she wrote the book after receiving a...

  • 'Hilda's Yard' opens at County Seat

    Pine Knot News|Sep 27, 2019

"Hilda's Yard" opens this Friday at the County Seat Theater. It's an exciting summer day in 1956 for Hilda and Sam Fluck (played by Shey Peterson and Brian Lokken). Newly on their own since their 30-something children Gary and Janey moved out, they are finally ready to relax. Hilda plans to hang her laundry while Sam goes to buy a shiny new television. What could disturb their simple peace? Turns out doors are merely decoration as Gary (Bard Day) and Janey (Kitara Peterson) literally fall over... Full story
