For the seventh consecutive season, Lakehead Harvest Show is turning its Esko property into a holiday wonderland, with a new burst of lights from a beloved Duluth display. Beginning Friday and for the next three weekends, there will be hayrides, Christmas lights and activities galore at the property located at 70 E. St. Louis River Road, roughly 8 miles northeast of Cloquet. "It's a good way to spend time with family and an easy way to create memories," said Ryan Hansen, president of the club...
They liked its unique nature, which is something, considering that the state flag design entered by Cloquet artist Sarah Agaton Howes was one of 2,600 entries reviewed by the State Emblem Redesign Commission this fall as it winnows down to a final new Minnesota flag and seal by year's end. The commission deliberated for hours on Nov. 21 and voted in six flag designs and five seal entries. Agaton Howes' flag, based on Native loom and bead work, features a geometric yellow North Star and...
The shirts said it all: Vetsgiving. Once again, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 of Carlton County organized a massive Thanksgiving campaign here: cooking, serving and delivering a record 950 meals to local residents. It was the seventh year the DAV has taken charge of the community meal, after the College of St. Scholastica consolidated its Thanksgiving efforts into one giant meal in Duluth in 2016, leaving Cloquet with no local community meal. The DAV has seen attendance wax and wane...

A 64-year-old man suffered serious burns when trying to retrieve items from the burning garage. He was in stable condition by early this week. Deputies and the Cloquet Area Fire District were called to the 3500 block of Nelson Road, just west of...

The issue of using outside social workers received a second vote in a month at Monday's Carlton County board meeting, where one commissioner continued to vote "no." Commissioner Tom Proulx was the lone dissenting vote in the board's 4-1 approval to use case management services from TLC of Duluth to help address a surge in cases involving people on elderly and disability waivers. Unlike at the meeting Nov. 14, when Proulx conducted an in-depth inquiry of county staff and administration and told...
Thirty-two homesteads in Progress Township are set to receive notice by mail of a pending Carlton County board vote regarding an elk reintroduction pen proposed to be located there. Saying they wanted to collect public input by those most closely affected, county commissioners unanimously tabled a vote Monday that would have addressed the pen. Instead, commissioners agreed to alert residents of the possibility and give them time to appear at the next board meeting, 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Carlton County Transportation Building. “I just want the p...
County Seat Theater Company gets in on the holiday action this month with a side-splitting journey to a small town in Texas in "Christmas Belles." A church Christmas program spins hilariously out of control in this Southern farce about squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator. Numerous shows are already sold out, so getting tickets now will ensure a seat. The County Seat Theater Company will present local performances of "Christmas...
The Walli family home, just northwest of the city of Cromwell, required a septic system redo, which has consumed our lives for some time. The project called for both intelligent labor and impressive machinery, including two backhoes and a vintage dump truck. We started this summer by logging off the larger trees, mostly birch and poplar. We tossed the long skinny boughs downhill like javelins. The larger trunks Rod cut to manageable lengths - more or less than 2 feet - with his chainsaw. We...
What good is a state flag? According to flag expert Lee Herold of Rochester, Minnesota, a good flag creates a distinctive brand. Ideally, Minnesota's flag should also create unity, representing our state's values everywhere it flies. But this has not always been the case. The people of Minnesota have altered their state flag design in the past to meet changing needs. They are continuing to do so today. Thirty-five years elapsed between Minnesota statehood (1858) and the creation of an official...
The Pine Knot News observed its fifth anniversary at the end of October rather quietly, because staff members at the independent locally owned newspaper were busy working. From humble beginnings in October of 2018 when its five owners mailed free copies across northern Carlton County, the Pine Knot News has grown to become the dominant newspaper in northern Carlton County. From the start, the goal was to cover local news, sports, issues, faces and events across Carlton County as comprehensively...
The Cloquet and Esko girls basketball teams battled for the first time Tuesday with more than just bragging rights on the line. The Lumberjacks prevailed to win the first "Battle for the Paddle." Esko head coach Sue Northey came up with the idea. "We were looking to come up with a trophy game, as we have met each other 30 times dating back to 1987," Northey said, pointing out that since Carlton and Wrenshall have merged sports programs, that left no local girls teams playing for jugs or other...
Kerry Rodd [email protected] For the first time in school history, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team hit the ice playing in Class A this week, after years of opting up to play in Class AA. The Lumberjacks didn't disappoint local fans Tuesday, as they skated away with a tough 4-3 victory over Hibbing/Chisholm in the season opener at Northwoods Credit Union Arena. The Lumberjacks struggled in the early part of the first period against the Bluejackets. At the 9-minute, 9-second mark...
Two goals scored in the final moments of regulation sent the Minnesota Wilderness to a 5-4 victory over the Janesville Jets Saturday in Wisconsin, capping a successful 2-1 week which kept the team atop the league standings. With goaltender Loris Uberti pulled for an extra attacker, Gustavs Ozolins tied the game on a shot through traffic with 1 minute, 28 seconds left. That was followed by Ashton Dahms notching the game-winner on a breakaway with 12.4 seconds left. That capped off a back-and-forth game in which the Wilderness gave up a lead...
There are only 25 days until Christmas Day, when families will get together for fun, food and presents. I remember how excited my brother, sister and I were to see the presents we got. For weeks we would look at the “Wish Book” (Sears and Montgomery Ward Christmas catalogs), choosing all the gifts we wanted Santa to bring us on Christmas Eve. Of course, we were happy with any presents we received. Our Christmas celebration really started between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the Wood Con...
