Obituary: James Alan Ziehl

December 15, 2023

James Alan Ziehl passed away peacefully at St. Luke's hospital on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, at the age of 66, with his wife, Lori, by his side. The eldest son of Ronald and Barbara Ziehl of Cloquet, Jim was an avid Boy Scout in his younger years, earning Eagle rank in 1972. He was awarded many merits as part of the swim team, alongside twin sister Robbin (Fish). Jim joined the U.S. Navy in 1976, and 1976-1980 was an electrician aboard the USS Coral Sea CV-43, where he met best friend, Jeff Ridley. They maintained a strong and unique friendship throughout his life. Jim moved on to work at Potlatch as an electrician for many years before retiring to his home in Barnum. Jim was a lifelong member of the Cloquet Eagles Aerie 1163 and donated much of his time to helping the community. He believed strongly in altruism and reverence to others, and put forth much of his life toward accomplishing these goals through his work with the Cloquet VFW and DAV.

Before health problems related to his long battle with COPD, Jim enjoyed visiting his brother Terry in Cody, Wyoming, and hunting, fishing, camping, outdoor life, derby cars, spending time with family, and his little dog, Rascal. He was an exceptional father and always put his family before all else. Jim will be greatly missed by many at home as well as in the community.

He is survived by his wife, Lori; daughter, Cassandra (Jake Linge); two stepsons, Hank Devriendt (Callie) and Cody Isaacson; twin sister, Robbin; brother, Terry (Terry); and three nieces and a nephew. Jim's strong values will be honored and remembered in his six grandchildren, Royce James, Graisyn Nova, Hayden Willow, Layla Rose, Colten Henry and Emma Sue.

A celebration of life will be held 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the Cloquet VFW Post 3979, at 210 Arch St., Cloquet. Dinner will be served. In lieu of flowers, please consider monetary donations to the Cloquet Eagles Aerie 1163.

Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. To sign the guest book and leave an online tribute go to http://www.atkins northlandfuneralhome.com.
