I’m sure that as you are reading this, you are thankful for the completion of the two box culverts between Cromwell and Wright. I had to take the detours only occasionally, but now that I don’t have to, I sure am thankful for the direct route to Cromwell from my home in Wright. It’s been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get some news into my columns. It’s not because I didn’t want to but because I just couldn’t. I was in the hospital for 12 days in July and have been taking antibiotic treatments every day since for an infection in my colon. Hopefully that is cleared up and I can now proceed with the cancer surgery. It’s been a long-haul, but I’m looking forward to a full recovery in the near future. My cancer journey has started in earnest now. Last week, I had my first chemo treatment, and this week I get chemo and a PET scan. Lots to absorb in the brain and body as this journey continues. Salutations, friends: I am now embarking on a journey that I am not looking forward to. As of a few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative aggressive breast cancer, so I will be starting chemotherapy and getting a PET scan. Chemo will be once a week after that. I had to give up subbing for now, which hurts, as I love the students and staff and will really miss them. The lawn in front of the Wright post office looks like a dried-up desert with all the weird trails the voles made as they crawled under the snow this winter. As soon as the snow melted, this phenomenon was revealed. Now you will have to wait until this latest snow melts before you can see it again. Our yard is so covered with pine needles and broken branches after this winter. It’s really a mess and will have to be picked up before any mowing can be done. Many years ago, when I was still teaching fourth grade, I had my students interview elders and write their life stories. One year, a student interviewed Ruth Karki, who lived south of Cromwell. The Tri-Community Food Shelf in Cromwell is participating in Minnesota FoodShare's March Campaign through April 9. This month is interesting, as it has several dates that are palindromes, such as 3-2-23, 3-20-23, 3-21-23, 3-22-23. That means they can be read forward and backward and still be the same. Congratulations to John Dahlman on having a couple of his “Blue Ice” photographs published in the February-March issue of Lake Superior Magazine. Blue ice results when heavy snow falls and is compressed, and the air bubbles are squeezed out, enlarging the ice crystals. This enlargement is responsible for the ice’s blue color. Have you heard of serendipity? It’s an unplanned fortunate discovery. Well, that happened to me last Sunday. I had put a load of clothes into the washer and against my better judgment, I left it running while I went to church. I got home in a couple of hours and, you guessed it, the washer wasn’t able to discharge the water down the drain, and it ran all over the porch floor, soaking into the rugs and seeping all over. As you probably have noticed, the United States Postal Service has been having a lot of difficulties of late. Mail has not been delivered for days in some cases. Even our local post offices in Wright and Cromwell have had reduced hours due to staffing shortages. But at least we aren’t stuck in airports for days trying to get back home from Christmas trips. Our sincere sympathies to the family of Karee Hansen Rowell on her tragic death on Dec. 18 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time. According to the Mohave Valley Daily News, three people died following an apparent murder-suicide late Sunday, Dec. 18, at a Bullhead City home. Police said Timothy Wayne Albright, 64, of Cromwell killed his fiancée, Karee Pauline (Hansen) Rowell, 64, and her cousin, Trisha Lynn Wallin, 58, who lived in Bullhead City. The past week has been tough for many folks in the area. We endured hours of snowstorms, and then the power was out, for as long as 72 hours for some. As for me, I lost electricity at 3 p.m. Thursday and it wasn’t restored until 8 p.m. Friday. It’s amazing how creative you must become to cope with this situation. First off, thankfully, we have a woodstove in the basement with plenty of dry wood, so our house never went below 65 degrees.
